[00:00] (0.56s)
hi everyone welcome back to the history
[00:02] (2.64s)
and 20 podcast
[00:03] (3.92s)
thanks for tuning in sorry it's been a
[00:05] (5.84s)
while a lot of other stuff going on been
[00:07] (7.68s)
quite busy so
[00:09] (9.36s)
uh yeah get on with this one it's uh
[00:11] (11.36s)
about someone i think we've all heard of
[00:13] (13.04s)
it's vlad the imperler
[00:14] (14.64s)
but why just used to one on him and why
[00:16] (16.72s)
now well it's october so
[00:19] (19.20s)
halloween or spooky season or whatever
[00:22] (22.88s)
and obviously vlad the imperler was the
[00:24] (24.32s)
inspiration behind brum stoker's
[00:26] (26.40s)
famous villain dracula so as usual go
[00:29] (29.84s)
over a bit of a personal profile about
[00:32] (32.08s)
get straight into it so he was born
[00:34] (34.08s)
round about 14
[00:35] (35.36s)
28 to 31 and no one actually knows the
[00:38] (38.80s)
exact date of his birth but it was wrong
[00:40] (40.48s)
about those years
[00:41] (41.68s)
and he was known as either vlad iii vlad
[00:43] (43.76s)
the impaler of vlad the third dracula
[00:47] (47.28s)
he died somewhere between december 1476
[00:51] (51.44s)
to january 1477 and he reigned
[00:55] (55.12s)
on three separate occasions the first
[00:57] (57.12s)
was just a short one
[00:58] (58.32s)
from october to november 1448
[01:01] (61.52s)
the next one was from 1456 to 1462
[01:05] (65.60s)
and then the last one was from 1476 to
[01:09] (69.52s)
his marriage is we don't know much about
[01:10] (70.96s)
that he just has someone who's always
[01:12] (72.48s)
referred to as an
[01:13] (73.20s)
unknown first wife and then justina
[01:17] (77.12s)
silgari well tell you what before we go
[01:19] (79.52s)
any further
[01:20] (80.40s)
i'll apologize for any pronunciations
[01:22] (82.24s)
obviously it's all from
[01:23] (83.52s)
eastern europe romania hungary i don't
[01:26] (86.16s)
know how to pronounce
[01:27] (87.36s)
the names over there so you'll have to
[01:29] (89.44s)
bear with me on that one i'm afraid
[01:31] (91.92s)
excuse me um and as far as we're aware
[01:35] (95.28s)
he had three children the eldest was
[01:36] (96.88s)
called mania who was born in 1462.
[01:39] (99.76s)
then he had an unnamed second son who
[01:41] (101.68s)
was killed in 1486
[01:43] (103.76s)
and a third son also called vlad vlad
[01:45] (105.84s)
dracula
[01:47] (107.36s)
he was part of the dracula dynasty and
[01:49] (109.92s)
also married into the house of basarab
[01:52] (112.64s)
so just a quick note before we go any
[01:54] (114.56s)
further as well so throughout this
[01:56] (116.40s)
i'm just going to refer to vlad the
[01:58] (118.08s)
impeller as either vlad or vlad the
[02:00] (120.56s)
imperler because there are a few other
[02:02] (122.08s)
characters called vlad
[02:03] (123.68s)
so i'll refer to them in full such as
[02:06] (126.08s)
vlad ii dracula who's vlad's father
[02:08] (128.72s)
of vladislav ii who was voivod of
[02:10] (130.88s)
valakia for a time
[02:12] (132.40s)
just so to avoid any confusion and if i
[02:14] (134.80s)
remember i'll post a list of the
[02:16] (136.40s)
characters in the
[02:17] (137.60s)
description box below so you can because
[02:20] (140.08s)
there's a lot of people in this and just
[02:21] (141.44s)
so you know
[02:22] (142.48s)
who's who so we'll start off as usual
[02:26] (146.08s)
the early life so with vlad's early life
[02:29] (149.20s)
so obviously as i said vlad iii who's
[02:31] (151.04s)
better known as vlad dracula or vlad the
[02:32] (152.88s)
imperler
[02:33] (153.84s)
he was born in sigisura which is a part
[02:35] (155.92s)
of transylvania which covers modern day
[02:37] (157.84s)
romania you'll be able to see on the map
[02:39] (159.52s)
on the screen there where
[02:40] (160.88s)
whereabouts transylvania is in relation
[02:42] (162.80s)
to modern day romania so
[02:45] (165.28s)
uh yeah he was born there he was the
[02:46] (166.80s)
second illegitimate son of
[02:48] (168.64s)
vlad the second dracul hence the name
[02:50] (170.88s)
dracula
[02:53] (173.20s)
now his father was the voivode which is
[02:55] (175.04s)
just another word for ruler
[02:56] (176.64s)
of valacchia which you'll also see on
[02:58] (178.48s)
the map there um
[03:00] (180.56s)
he was the voivode of valachia from 1436
[03:04] (184.40s)
and again from 1443 to 47. now the
[03:07] (187.36s)
nickname dracul came from vlad ii's
[03:09] (189.60s)
membership in
[03:10] (190.56s)
something called the order of the dragon
[03:12] (192.56s)
which was a military fraternity funded
[03:14] (194.32s)
by sigismund the holy roman emperor in
[03:17] (197.28s)
and it was dedicated to stopping the
[03:18] (198.72s)
ottoman turks advancing to europe from
[03:20] (200.72s)
the east
[03:21] (201.76s)
so as i said before vlad's date of birth
[03:24] (204.24s)
is often contended because there's no
[03:25] (205.84s)
definitive sources as to when he was
[03:27] (207.28s)
actually born
[03:28] (208.32s)
so the dates are often presumed to be
[03:29] (209.84s)
somewhere between 14 28 to 31
[03:32] (212.48s)
and we know this because he was old
[03:33] (213.68s)
enough to be a candidate to the throne
[03:35] (215.12s)
of volakia
[03:37] (217.12s)
in 1448 meaning his birth would have had
[03:39] (219.28s)
to have been
[03:40] (220.80s)
at least 20 years before then so what we
[03:43] (223.60s)
do know though is he was born in
[03:45] (225.44s)
where his father lived in a three-story
[03:46] (226.88s)
stone house because there's a picture on
[03:48] (228.72s)
the screen there so
[03:50] (230.32s)
yeah and uh as an adolescent boy
[03:54] (234.24s)
during the varna crusade which was from
[03:57] (237.04s)
1443 to 44
[03:59] (239.12s)
vlad was sent as a hostage to the court
[04:00] (240.96s)
of the ottoman sultan murad ii
[04:04] (244.16s)
who reigned from 14 21 to 44 and 46-51
[04:08] (248.24s)
now it's here that vlad was actually
[04:10] (250.24s)
exploited as a child sex slave
[04:12] (252.56s)
and the sort of buggery to which he was
[04:14] (254.56s)
subjected to
[04:15] (255.92s)
uh can be considered the likely
[04:17] (257.52s)
psychiatric source of his later
[04:19] (259.04s)
obsessions which
[04:20] (260.64s)
is something we'll obviously go into
[04:21] (261.84s)
into greater detail pretty shortly
[04:24] (264.48s)
so as i said before he ran three times
[04:27] (267.84s)
on three separate occasions so
[04:29] (269.68s)
although his first and third rules were
[04:31] (271.20s)
significantly shorter than his second
[04:33] (273.20s)
they're still relevant in any discussion
[04:35] (275.04s)
about vlad so
[04:36] (276.72s)
with no further ado let's carry on with
[04:38] (278.56s)
the first reign which was like said
[04:40] (280.08s)
october to november 1448
[04:43] (283.36s)
so upon the death of his father and
[04:45] (285.04s)
elder brother in 1447
[04:47] (287.20s)
vlad became a potential claim to the
[04:48] (288.96s)
valackian throne because
[04:50] (290.56s)
in volakian history it was always
[04:53] (293.20s)
assumed that any son
[04:54] (294.56s)
of a ruler of a voivode of valaccia uh
[04:58] (298.40s)
did have a claim to throne obviously
[04:59] (299.84s)
even though vlad was second son he still
[05:02] (302.08s)
had a claim to the throne
[05:03] (303.44s)
however the current ruler who was
[05:05] (305.04s)
someone called vladislav ii
[05:07] (307.04s)
had taken the throne before vlad had a
[05:08] (308.72s)
chance to publicly put his claim forward
[05:11] (311.12s)
now it's often believed that vladislav
[05:12] (312.88s)
ii assassinated vlad the second dracula
[05:15] (315.20s)
who was
[05:15] (315.68s)
vlad the imperial's father in order to
[05:17] (317.68s)
seize the throne
[05:18] (318.88s)
now vladislav ii was assisted by a man
[05:21] (321.12s)
called john hunyadi
[05:22] (322.48s)
who was a leading military figurehead in
[05:24] (324.16s)
volakia and part of a noble
[05:25] (325.76s)
transylvanian family
[05:28] (328.00s)
but in september 1448 john hunyadi
[05:31] (331.12s)
launched a campaign against the ottoman
[05:33] (333.60s)
so vlad took advantage of hunyadi's
[05:35] (335.60s)
absence and broke into valaccia in early
[05:37] (337.44s)
october
[05:38] (338.48s)
now the ottoman forces defeated
[05:40] (340.00s)
hunyadi's army in the battle of kosovo
[05:42] (342.00s)
between 17th to 18th of october
[05:44] (344.64s)
1448 but hunyadi's deputy a man called
[05:47] (347.84s)
nicolas vizanki
[05:49] (349.12s)
he urged vlad to meet him in
[05:50] (350.40s)
transylvania but vlad refused
[05:52] (352.48s)
so vladislav the second return to
[05:54] (354.40s)
valaccio with the remnants of his
[05:55] (355.68s)
defeated army
[05:56] (356.64s)
but it was still enough to scare vlad
[05:58] (358.24s)
off so vlad then fled to the ottoman
[06:00] (360.16s)
empire and arrived in a place called
[06:02] (362.56s)
on the 7th of december 1448 which put an
[06:05] (365.12s)
end to his first reign
[06:07] (367.68s)
now his second reign was from the 15th
[06:09] (369.92s)
of april 1456
[06:12] (372.08s)
to july 1462.
[06:15] (375.76s)
so vlad moved from a team to moldavia
[06:18] (378.32s)
which forms part of modern day moldova
[06:20] (380.40s)
romania
[06:21] (381.28s)
and ukraine today and that was where his
[06:23] (383.60s)
uncle bogdan ii
[06:25] (385.04s)
had taken the throne with john hunyadi's
[06:26] (386.96s)
support in autumn of 1449.
[06:29] (389.68s)
so vlad allegedly wanted to settle in
[06:31] (391.28s)
brazov which was a city in transylvania
[06:33] (393.76s)
but hunyadi forbade the burgers who were
[06:35] (395.68s)
just the privileged citizens of medieval
[06:37] (397.36s)
european towns they called burgers
[06:39] (399.36s)
not like cheeseburgers but b-u-r-g-h grs
[06:44] (404.96s)
to let him settle there in a letter that
[06:46] (406.48s)
he wrote on the 6th of february 1452
[06:49] (409.28s)
so vlad instead returned to moldavia now
[06:51] (411.84s)
unfortunately
[06:53] (413.04s)
and not for the last time which is quite
[06:54] (414.80s)
annoying from a historian's perspective
[06:57] (417.28s)
there's a gap in the history of vlad's
[06:58] (418.80s)
life here so we do know that you
[07:00] (420.16s)
returned to hungary sometime before the
[07:01] (421.84s)
third of july 1456
[07:04] (424.16s)
because on that day hunyadi informed the
[07:05] (425.92s)
citizens of brasov that he'd tasked vlad
[07:07] (427.76s)
with the defense of the transylvanian
[07:10] (430.16s)
from the ottomans so unfortunately there
[07:12] (432.32s)
is a bit of a gap there for your gap but
[07:14] (434.88s)
we move on so once again vlad inverted
[07:17] (437.84s)
valaccia in spring 1456
[07:20] (440.16s)
but rather than garnering support from
[07:22] (442.24s)
the ottomans he instead tried with
[07:23] (443.76s)
hungarian support
[07:25] (445.20s)
now he was successful this time in two
[07:27] (447.04s)
ways so firstly vladislav
[07:29] (449.20s)
ii who was the imposter in vlad's view
[07:31] (451.60s)
was killed in the inversion
[07:33] (453.84s)
and secondly vlad was proclaimed voivode
[07:36] (456.32s)
of valakia
[07:37] (457.28s)
now this was evident in the letter that
[07:38] (458.72s)
was addressed to the burgers of brazov
[07:40] (460.24s)
on the 10th september 1456.
[07:42] (462.64s)
so in this letter he promised to protect
[07:44] (464.40s)
them from an ottoman invasion of
[07:45] (465.60s)
transylvania
[07:46] (466.72s)
but he also sought their support if the
[07:48] (468.32s)
ottomans occupied valakia
[07:49] (469.92s)
now perhaps the most important element
[07:51] (471.68s)
of this letter though i think is when he
[07:53] (473.52s)
when vlad stated when a man is strong
[07:56] (476.32s)
and powerful he can make peace as he
[07:58] (478.08s)
wants to
[07:59] (479.04s)
but when he is weak a strong one will
[08:00] (480.96s)
come and do what he wants to him
[08:03] (483.36s)
now this quote is often the first bit of
[08:05] (485.04s)
evidence that many historians see as
[08:06] (486.80s)
vlad's completely authoritarian
[08:08] (488.48s)
personality
[08:09] (489.84s)
coming out into the open so shortly
[08:12] (492.32s)
after this infamous leicester is when
[08:13] (493.68s)
vlad began his purges
[08:15] (495.20s)
and now the contemporary byzantine
[08:16] (496.80s)
historian lanikos
[08:18] (498.96s)
charles conaldies charcondis
[08:22] (502.08s)
recorded in his chronicle that hundreds
[08:23] (503.84s)
of thousands of people were impaled with
[08:26] (506.08s)
the aid of
[08:27] (507.60s)
needle thin grease sticks which was
[08:29] (509.84s)
rammed up the victim's rectum and out
[08:31] (511.36s)
through the mouth in such a way that
[08:32] (512.72s)
these death throats could actually last
[08:34] (514.16s)
for days
[08:36] (516.00s)
at vlad's order at the beginning of his
[08:37] (517.44s)
second round
[08:39] (519.12s)
now he initially targeted the
[08:40] (520.40s)
aristocrats who'd participated in the
[08:42] (522.08s)
murder of his father and brother
[08:43] (523.68s)
or whom he suspected had conspired
[08:45] (525.36s)
against him as well
[08:46] (526.88s)
now interestingly charcoal deals that's
[08:49] (529.52s)
what he's called shortcut and deals
[08:51] (531.52s)
also wrote that vlad helped the villain
[08:53] (533.36s)
economy somewhat by using the money
[08:55] (535.20s)
property and other goods
[08:56] (536.64s)
of his victims to help pay off any debts
[08:58] (538.56s)
he'd accumulate from his previous
[09:00] (540.00s)
inversions
[09:00] (540.88s)
and to pay soldiers in his retinue
[09:04] (544.24s)
now the next major event in vlad's
[09:05] (545.68s)
secondary and also occurred early on so
[09:08] (548.16s)
john hunyadi had died on the 11th of
[09:09] (549.92s)
august 1456 and his son ladislau sunyadi
[09:13] (553.36s)
became the captain general of hungary
[09:15] (555.60s)
now laddie slouch accused vlad of having
[09:17] (557.76s)
no intention of remaining faithful to
[09:19] (559.68s)
the kingdom of hungary
[09:20] (560.88s)
in a letter to the burgers of brazov and
[09:22] (562.80s)
ordered them to support a man called dan
[09:24] (564.64s)
the third
[09:25] (565.36s)
who was vladislav the second brother
[09:27] (567.36s)
against vlad
[09:29] (569.12s)
however the king of hungary ladislaus v
[09:32] (572.16s)
had ladislov hunyadi executed on the
[09:34] (574.32s)
16th march 1457.
[09:36] (576.64s)
now hunyadi's mother ursabet sligay and
[09:39] (579.28s)
her brother michael stood
[09:40] (580.96s)
stirred up a rebellion against the king
[09:43] (583.20s)
now taking advantage of the civil war in
[09:44] (584.96s)
hungary
[09:45] (585.76s)
vlad assisted his cousin stephen who was
[09:47] (587.84s)
the son of bogdan ii of moldavia
[09:50] (590.08s)
in his move to seize moldavia in june
[09:53] (593.68s)
now at this time vlad also broke into
[09:55] (595.68s)
transylvania and plundered the villagers
[09:57] (597.36s)
around brazov in a place called sibiu
[10:00] (600.40s)
and some early german stories from the
[10:02] (602.48s)
early 1460s
[10:04] (604.48s)
described vlad as carrying men women and
[10:06] (606.64s)
children from a transylvanian saxon
[10:08] (608.64s)
village
[10:09] (609.36s)
to valakia and having them impaled now
[10:11] (611.68s)
since the transylvanian saxons remain
[10:13] (613.60s)
loyal to ladislav's vlad's attack
[10:15] (615.92s)
against them
[10:16] (616.56s)
strengthen the position of the cigars
[10:19] (619.68s)
now vlad's representatives participated
[10:21] (621.60s)
in the peace negotiation between michael
[10:24] (624.24s)
and the saxons and the bergs of brazov
[10:26] (626.56s)
agreed that they'd expel dan the third
[10:28] (628.24s)
from their town
[10:29] (629.28s)
obviously delighted this news vlad
[10:31] (631.28s)
described michael as his lord and elder
[10:32] (632.96s)
brother in the letter that was dated the
[10:34] (634.40s)
first of december 1457.
[10:39] (639.52s)
excuse me but obviously nothing ever
[10:42] (642.40s)
goes to planning these sort of things as
[10:43] (643.84s)
i'm sure you've guessed by now
[10:45] (645.68s)
but ladislaus hunyadi's younger brother
[10:48] (648.16s)
a guy called matthias carvinius
[10:50] (650.24s)
covinus he was elected king of hungary
[10:52] (652.32s)
on the 24th of january 1458 upon ladies
[10:55] (655.28s)
lost the fifth's death
[10:57] (657.60s)
now he ordered the burgers of sibiu to
[10:59] (659.36s)
keep the peace with a vlad on the third
[11:00] (660.80s)
of march
[11:01] (661.68s)
and in may of 1458 vlad ordered the
[11:03] (663.92s)
burghs of brazov to send craftsman to
[11:05] (665.76s)
valvakia
[11:06] (666.56s)
he disregarded the transylvanian saxons
[11:08] (668.56s)
in this respect because he forbid the
[11:10] (670.08s)
saxons to enter valaccia
[11:11] (671.84s)
forcing them instead to sell the goods
[11:13] (673.20s)
to volatile merchants at board affairs
[11:15] (675.60s)
and one uh one saxon merchant
[11:18] (678.48s)
confiscated the steal a valachian
[11:20] (680.08s)
merchant had brought to him
[11:21] (681.60s)
and upon hearing about this vlad
[11:23] (683.12s)
ransacked and tortured saxon merchants
[11:25] (685.76s)
in early 1459 according to a letter
[11:28] (688.08s)
written by a guy called basarab laota
[11:30] (690.32s)
who was the son of dan the second of
[11:31] (691.68s)
volakia and in this letter he said
[11:34] (694.88s)
the officials and councillors of brassov
[11:36] (696.80s)
cried to us with broken hearts about the
[11:38] (698.48s)
things which dracula our enemy did
[11:40] (700.96s)
he captured all the merchants of brasov
[11:42] (702.72s)
who had gone in peace to valacki and
[11:44] (704.16s)
took all their wealth
[11:45] (705.44s)
but he was not satisfied with only the
[11:47] (707.12s)
wealth of these people
[11:48] (708.48s)
he imprisoned them and impaled them 41
[11:50] (710.72s)
in all he became even more evil and
[11:52] (712.88s)
gathered 300 boys from brazov that he
[11:54] (714.80s)
found in valaccia
[11:56] (716.24s)
of these he impaled some and burned
[11:59] (719.76s)
now in response dan the third broke into
[12:01] (721.92s)
valaccia but vlad defeated him and had
[12:03] (723.68s)
him executed
[12:04] (724.72s)
on the 20th of april 1460 and vlad then
[12:07] (727.84s)
invaded southern transylvania and
[12:09] (729.44s)
destroyed the suburbs of brazov
[12:11] (731.36s)
ordering the impalement of all men and
[12:13] (733.04s)
women who'd been captured
[12:14] (734.64s)
and peace was restored which was simply
[12:16] (736.56s)
through the people of brazil fearing
[12:18] (738.80s)
flood by the 26th of july 1460
[12:21] (741.84s)
when vlad addressed the burgers as his
[12:23] (743.44s)
brothers and friends so i mean you can
[12:24] (744.80s)
see by now he's obviously
[12:26] (746.08s)
an absolute sociopath but uh vlad
[12:29] (749.28s)
was obviously not all about brotherly
[12:30] (750.72s)
love and friendship because he had war
[12:32] (752.16s)
on his hands
[12:33] (753.84s)
and the war that he had was where the
[12:35] (755.52s)
ongoing ottoman wars
[12:37] (757.52s)
so i mentioned earlier he was promoted
[12:39] (759.44s)
as a defender on the hungarian border
[12:41] (761.52s)
against the ottoman empire who were
[12:43] (763.04s)
constantly
[12:44] (764.72s)
at odds with those in eastern europe
[12:48] (768.24s)
now the most famous of these skirmishes
[12:51] (771.12s)
in the ottoman wars in vlad's reign was
[12:53] (773.04s)
called the knight attack at tagoviste
[12:55] (775.52s)
and this battle was fought between
[12:56] (776.80s)
vlad's valackian forces
[12:58] (778.48s)
and sultan mehmed ii's ottoman forces
[13:00] (780.88s)
overnight
[13:01] (781.76s)
on thursday the 17th of june 1462.
[13:05] (785.12s)
now it initially started when vlad
[13:06] (786.72s)
refused to pay the jizya which is
[13:08] (788.40s)
attacks on non-muslim subjects to the
[13:11] (791.12s)
and it intensified when vlad invaded
[13:12] (792.96s)
bulgaria in early 1462.
[13:15] (795.44s)
so in response mcmahon raised an army of
[13:18] (798.00s)
approximately
[13:19] (799.52s)
000 men which was compromised of about a
[13:22] (802.72s)
hundred thousand regular troops 150 000
[13:25] (805.68s)
conscript engineers with the aim to
[13:27] (807.76s)
conquer valaccia and annex it to the
[13:29] (809.44s)
ottoman empire
[13:30] (810.80s)
in response vlad raised an army of 30
[13:32] (812.88s)
000 men 22
[13:34] (814.08s)
000 of whom were light infantry and
[13:35] (815.52s)
volunteers and with a band of these
[13:37] (817.52s)
soldiers he attacked the ottoman camp
[13:39] (819.04s)
overnight in an attempt to kill mehmed
[13:40] (820.80s)
himself
[13:41] (821.68s)
now the assassination attempt failed and
[13:43] (823.36s)
mcmahon marched the volakian capital of
[13:45] (825.28s)
targovista
[13:46] (826.32s)
where he discovered it had been almost
[13:47] (827.76s)
utterly destroyed
[13:49] (829.84s)
so upon leaving the capital and heading
[13:51] (831.44s)
back to constantinople
[13:53] (833.04s)
mechamedia's men were absolutely
[13:54] (834.24s)
horrified when they discovered what was
[13:55] (835.68s)
called a forest of the impaled
[13:57] (837.76s)
which was thousands and thousands of
[13:59] (839.44s)
impaled turks who'd been killed during
[14:01] (841.28s)
vlad's invasion of bulgaria
[14:03] (843.28s)
now the number 23 844
[14:06] (846.72s)
is mentioned by vlad himself that's of
[14:08] (848.48s)
carcasses impaled
[14:09] (849.76s)
in a letter to matthias corvinus in the
[14:11] (851.76s)
same year
[14:12] (852.96s)
and our favorite historian chukokon
[14:14] (854.96s)
deals wrote that
[14:16] (856.16s)
there were large stakes on which it was
[14:18] (858.08s)
said about 20 000 men women and children
[14:20] (860.64s)
had been spitted
[14:21] (861.84s)
quite a sight for the turks and the
[14:23] (863.20s)
sultan himself there were infants too
[14:25] (865.52s)
affixed to their mothers on the stakes
[14:27] (867.04s)
and birds had made nests in their
[14:28] (868.48s)
entrails
[14:29] (869.36s)
now it wasn't hard to see why even with
[14:31] (871.12s)
an army that was eight times larger than
[14:33] (873.76s)
that mech mead retreat you're back to
[14:35] (875.12s)
constantinople
[14:37] (877.44s)
so our next little section is on vlad's
[14:41] (881.20s)
imprisonment
[14:42] (882.32s)
which was from 1462 to 75
[14:45] (885.68s)
so shortly after receiving vlad's letter
[14:47] (887.68s)
described the gory details of the
[14:49] (889.20s)
thousands of impaled turks
[14:50] (890.96s)
matthias corvinus oh he's not now titled
[14:53] (893.44s)
matthias the first of hungary
[14:55] (895.36s)
he came to transylvania on november 1462
[14:58] (898.40s)
upon vlad's request
[14:59] (899.92s)
now vlad was insistent on waging war
[15:01] (901.84s)
against the ottoman empire
[15:03] (903.28s)
but matthias was hesitant despite the
[15:05] (905.04s)
negotiations lasting for weeks
[15:07] (907.84s)
so in the end matthias contacted a czech
[15:09] (909.84s)
mercenary he was called john giska of
[15:11] (911.60s)
brandes
[15:12] (912.48s)
and he captured vladimir rukai and
[15:14] (914.24s)
valakia in order to imprison him
[15:16] (916.16s)
now vlad was imprisoned in hungary at
[15:17] (917.68s)
matthias's request
[15:19] (919.28s)
but in order to explain vlad's sudden
[15:21] (921.04s)
imprisonment to pope pius ii
[15:23] (923.92s)
matthias presented three letters to him
[15:25] (925.84s)
allegedly written by vlad
[15:27] (927.52s)
on the 7th of november 1462.
[15:30] (930.72s)
one of them was allegedly written to
[15:32] (932.00s)
mehmed ii one was written to
[15:34] (934.08s)
mahmud pasha who was grand vizier of the
[15:35] (935.92s)
ottoman empire
[15:37] (937.12s)
and steve another to stephen iii of
[15:38] (938.96s)
moldavia who was vlad's cousin
[15:40] (940.64s)
who he assisted earlier if you remember
[15:42] (942.16s)
me mentioning him
[15:44] (944.08s)
now in these letters it was stated that
[15:45] (945.84s)
vlad had offered to join his forces with
[15:47] (947.60s)
the sultan's army against hungary
[15:49] (949.84s)
if the sultan restored him to his throne
[15:52] (952.24s)
so many historians agree that these
[15:53] (953.68s)
letters were forged to give grants of
[15:55] (955.20s)
vlad's imprisonment but
[15:56] (956.64s)
port pius ii obviously bought the story
[15:58] (958.72s)
of vlad's three letters
[16:00] (960.00s)
and he made chewery stead imprisoned now
[16:02] (962.40s)
he's first imprisoned in what's referred
[16:04] (964.16s)
to as the city of belgrade
[16:06] (966.00s)
which strangely wasn't the modern day
[16:07] (967.36s)
capital of serbia what's now a place
[16:09] (969.20s)
called alba julia in romania
[16:12] (972.32s)
and he was then taken to visagrad in
[16:14] (974.00s)
hungary where he's held 13 years
[16:16] (976.40s)
now as i mentioned earlier there was
[16:17] (977.76s)
another gap in vlad's biography and
[16:19] (979.44s)
that's here
[16:20] (980.24s)
so there's absolutely no documents that
[16:22] (982.08s)
we know of yet have actually been
[16:23] (983.36s)
preserved which refer to vlad
[16:25] (985.20s)
between 14 62 and 75 but what we do know
[16:28] (988.88s)
is that in summer 1475
[16:31] (991.20s)
stephen iii of moldavia sent his advice
[16:33] (993.44s)
to matthias corvinus
[16:34] (994.96s)
asking him to send vlad to valaccia
[16:36] (996.72s)
against basarab laota
[16:39] (999.44s)
who'd submitted himself to the ottomans
[16:41] (1001.52s)
now steven wanted to secure valakia for
[16:43] (1003.92s)
valakia for a ruler who'd been an enemy
[16:45] (1005.68s)
of the ottoman empire
[16:46] (1006.96s)
because the valakians were like the
[16:48] (1008.48s)
turks to the moldavians
[16:50] (1010.16s)
according to his letter now matthias
[16:52] (1012.08s)
accepted stephen's request and he
[16:53] (1013.60s)
released vlad from prison
[16:56] (1016.00s)
so my last little section is vlad's
[16:58] (1018.00s)
third rule and death which is 1475-77
[17:02] (1022.64s)
now matthias recognized vlad as the
[17:04] (1024.40s)
lawful prince of valakia but he didn't
[17:06] (1026.16s)
provide him military assistance to
[17:07] (1027.84s)
regain his principality
[17:09] (1029.52s)
so vlad moved from hungary to
[17:10] (1030.88s)
transylvania in june 1475
[17:13] (1033.52s)
before briefly returned to pecs in
[17:15] (1035.20s)
hungary to purchase a house
[17:16] (1036.80s)
and his house became known as dracula
[17:18] (1038.48s)
hazar which means dracula's house
[17:21] (1041.44s)
now mcmahon ii invaded moldavia and he
[17:24] (1044.00s)
defeated stephen the third of moldavia
[17:26] (1046.24s)
in the battle of valeer alba on the 26th
[17:28] (1048.40s)
of july 1476
[17:30] (1050.48s)
but meanwhile vlad stayed in brasov and
[17:32] (1052.56s)
he confirmed the commercial privileges
[17:34] (1054.24s)
of the local burgers in valakia
[17:36] (1056.16s)
on the 7th of october 1476. so stephen
[17:39] (1059.44s)
and vlad ceremoniously confirmed their
[17:41] (1061.12s)
alliance and together they occupied
[17:42] (1062.64s)
budapest
[17:43] (1063.68s)
forcing bassrob loyota to seek refuge in
[17:45] (1065.92s)
the ottoman empire
[17:46] (1066.96s)
on the 16th of november so vlad informed
[17:50] (1070.40s)
the merchants of brasov about his
[17:51] (1071.84s)
victory in a speech
[17:52] (1072.96s)
and urged them to come with him to
[17:54] (1074.24s)
valaccia and he was crowned voivod of
[17:56] (1076.16s)
valaccia on the 25th november 1476.
[17:59] (1079.52s)
however bas rob leota returned to
[18:01] (1081.92s)
valacki with ottoman support
[18:03] (1083.68s)
and completely overwhelmed the valakian
[18:05] (1085.44s)
forces taking them by surprise
[18:07] (1087.52s)
now vlad was killed in the fight in then
[18:09] (1089.36s)
sometime
[18:10] (1090.88s)
in either december 1476 or early january
[18:16] (1096.00s)
news age between 45-49
[18:19] (1099.12s)
so in a letter written on the 10th of
[18:20] (1100.64s)
january 1477
[18:22] (1102.64s)
stephen iii of moldavia related that
[18:24] (1104.72s)
vlad's moldavian retinue had been
[18:26] (1106.32s)
massacred
[18:27] (1107.12s)
and according to leonardo botta who was
[18:28] (1108.88s)
the milanese ambassador to buddha
[18:30] (1110.88s)
the ottomans cut vlad's corpses into
[18:32] (1112.64s)
pieces
[18:34] (1114.16s)
and uh his head had been sent to mcmahon
[18:36] (1116.00s)
the second and the actual sight of
[18:38] (1118.00s)
vlad's burial is unknown which further
[18:39] (1119.68s)
adds to elements
[18:40] (1120.72s)
of the mystery of his life but according
[18:43] (1123.04s)
to popular tradition in the 19th century
[18:45] (1125.20s)
pieces of vlad's body were reportedly
[18:46] (1126.88s)
buried in the monastery of snagov
[18:48] (1128.56s)
which is in modern day romania however
[18:50] (1130.64s)
when it was actually excavated in 1933
[18:53] (1133.12s)
nothing was found
[18:54] (1134.40s)
which only adds to the horror stories
[18:55] (1135.92s)
and myths which surround the real life
[18:57] (1137.44s)
dracula
[18:59] (1139.28s)
so that's vlad's life so we'll have a
[19:01] (1141.04s)
little bit about his legacy now
[19:02] (1142.56s)
so there's plenty of works containing
[19:04] (1144.96s)
stories about vlad's cruelty and these
[19:06] (1146.64s)
actually emerged as early as the 1480s
[19:08] (1148.80s)
in the holy roman empire
[19:10] (1150.48s)
and obviously invention of movable print
[19:12] (1152.24s)
in the 1450s thanks to a man called
[19:14] (1154.08s)
johannes gutenberg
[19:15] (1155.60s)
meant that these stories and woodcuts
[19:17] (1157.36s)
could be published on mass and
[19:18] (1158.56s)
distributed across europe
[19:20] (1160.16s)
and these initial stories about vlad
[19:22] (1162.80s)
made about vlad and his reputation
[19:24] (1164.56s)
actually became one of the earliest
[19:25] (1165.84s)
examples of a best-selling book
[19:28] (1168.48s)
and obviously to enhance sales many of
[19:30] (1170.24s)
the books were published with woodcuts
[19:31] (1171.68s)
on their title pages which
[19:33] (1173.28s)
depicted these horrific scenes and
[19:35] (1175.52s)
notable examples these include the
[19:37] (1177.12s)
additions published in nuremberg in 1499
[19:40] (1180.24s)
and stroudsburg in 1500 as you'll be
[19:42] (1182.24s)
able to see on the screen now
[19:44] (1184.80s)
but where did the dracula connection
[19:46] (1186.48s)
come from so we know that it was called
[19:47] (1187.84s)
vlad dracul but what about the vampiric
[19:49] (1189.76s)
element
[19:50] (1190.72s)
so interestingly bram stoker's 1897
[19:53] (1193.52s)
novel dracula
[19:54] (1194.64s)
is actually the first time a connection
[19:56] (1196.24s)
was made between flood and vampirism
[19:59] (1199.04s)
but it's not just the bloodsucking
[20:00] (1200.32s)
element which makes it that vastly
[20:02] (1202.08s)
different to vlad's life
[20:03] (1203.52s)
there's numerous other similarities that
[20:05] (1205.12s)
can be drawn so for instance
[20:07] (1207.04s)
the fact that stalkers count dracula
[20:09] (1209.04s)
lives in a transylvanian castle
[20:10] (1210.96s)
as did vlad and the stakes which can be
[20:13] (1213.28s)
used to kill vampires such as vladim
[20:15] (1215.12s)
pearl and his enemies on stakes
[20:17] (1217.12s)
and rumors of his body being buried in a
[20:18] (1218.80s)
church which was popular in the 19th
[20:20] (1220.40s)
century regarding vlad
[20:21] (1221.68s)
and obviously nothing being found there
[20:23] (1223.52s)
another element that's similar to
[20:24] (1224.88s)
dracula in the book
[20:27] (1227.12s)
and one of my favorite historians norman
[20:29] (1229.84s)
davies
[20:30] (1230.64s)
he contends that stories about vlad's
[20:32] (1232.48s)
cruelty served to remind us about
[20:34] (1234.08s)
religious fanaticism and inherent evil
[20:36] (1236.48s)
which persisted in western europe as
[20:38] (1238.24s)
well as eastern europe
[20:41] (1241.04s)
now to explain this he draws upon
[20:42] (1242.56s)
examples of mary the first of england
[20:44] (1244.16s)
who you might know as bloody mary
[20:46] (1246.00s)
and her persecution of protestants i
[20:47] (1247.84s)
think off top my head she burned about
[20:50] (1250.72s)
in her reign as relating john fox's book
[20:52] (1252.96s)
of martyrs in 1563
[20:55] (1255.28s)
and he says they belong to the same
[20:56] (1256.88s)
sickening genre as the horrors of
[20:58] (1258.48s)
valacki and vampire prince
[21:00] (1260.64s)
so i hope you enjoyed this one make sure
[21:02] (1262.72s)
you've obviously got plenty of uh
[21:04] (1264.48s)
garlic in your house to keep away those
[21:05] (1265.92s)
vampires so hope everyone who's
[21:08] (1268.00s)
