🤖 AI-Generated Summary:

    – P (Point) — сформулировать основной аргумент в теме абзаца;
    – E (Example) — привести пример из текста;
    – T (Technique) — указать литературный приём, использованный в примере;
    – E (Explanation) — связать приём с аргументом и объяснить его влияние.
  • Анализировать и учиться на примерах работ других учеников, а также использовать онлайн-ресурсы (например, IB English Guys, Think IB).

hi everyone I am a May 2024 IV graduate student and in this video I would like to share some tips on how did I get a seven English language and literature HL I really hope that this video could be of any help to you I really wanted to make this video because English for me has been a very difficult Journey when I first came into dp1 my writing skills were really bad and I was constantly scoring fours I did not even know how to write a basic paragraph or formulate a topic sentence but I gradually discovered that the key to getting a high score in this subject isn't about flowery languages or fancy words it is more about understanding what Ivy actually wants to see in your writing and some tips that I find really helpful when I was pulling my grade up number one the basics figuring out what the IB actually wants to see from your writing to do this I would really suggest to take a look at the course guide and also especially the rubrics for each paper because it's details exactly what the IV wants to see from you it is also important to know the weate of each assignment relative to your total grade for example how much percentage does your paper one or paper two count because it allows you to decide how much effort you want to put in in each assignment for example paper one is a commentary paper it tests on whether you can analyze a soryal choices of a text to support your arguments you need a formulate argument which may or may not be also the author's arguments and analyze the choices the literary techniques the author uses to support your argument paper one has many different text types but if you know a variety of literary techniques and how to structure a basic paper one then the text type doesn't really matter that much in terms of how you write it but regardless it's still very important that you know different text types IB test you on especially the ones they really like to use like infographics and articles for paper two the IB is looking for a comparison between the meaning and aoral choices uh between two texts it is much more literary than paper one in the sense that you're reading books um instead of analyzing let's say a essay and for this reason it can also be more convenient because you can find um lots of study Guides [Music] Online number two literary techniques be sure that you know a variety of literary techniques especially the most common ones because they are literally the foundation of the subjects you would need to use them all the time in all assignments knowing the basics of techniques would at least allow you to make something up when you're given a unfamiliar prompt or text type this is because this course is not purely about understanding the meaning of text but rather to be able to analyze the seral choices that support these meaning I have compiled a list of literary techniques that I used when I was studying for exams which I put in the comment section number three how to actually write a paragraph the structure that I found most helpful was the pet structure it literally Saed my life because after learning it my in- class test scores went from fours to sevens it is very easy to learn and apparently the IB really likes this as well I think this method is very suitable for people who don't have their own writing style yet and don't exactly know how to structure a essay the p is the point that you want to argue it should be a umbrella topic sentence and it should be concise in conveying your argument the E is the example the reference from the text the t is the technique from the example we just used you need to explain how does this technique allow the auor to support the meaning the text or your arguments e is explanations sometimes it is already Incorporated when you're explaining the technique but this is the time for you to link back to the argument so here I'm showing an actual paragraph which I used the P structure to write about and we shortly uh talk through it so we can see here the yellow highlighted sentence is our P the point the argument of this paragraph uh and the green text here um the green text are the examples uh which I reference from the text that I was using and in this case it is AER Miller's Death of a Salesman um and the purple Tex um the purple text uh are the techniques so for example here I'm talking about the eonis and the irritated tone and I'm explaining how does these techniques um support my argument here uh and the orange text is is the explanation um in which I link back to my argument however uh we can see that sometimes there is no orange because explanation is already Incorporated when I was explaining the technique this can be shown um in this part here where I have I'm talking about my example in the green part however I didn't have an actual very explicit sentence uh about explanation because the explanation is already Incorporated when I was spending a long section here explaining how does my technique support arguments so in a paragraph you have one p one point your arguments and about two to three [Music] etes number four learn from examples if you're not good at writing and don't know how to write a paper then look at how other people are doing it learn from the way they structure their essay or the literary techniques that you're they're using I think that learning from examples is the fastest way what you can improve because other people have already pointed out the right way for you I personally learned a lot from my classmates writing and also from online resources like IB English guys and think IB number five practice especially with past papers because the IB is really repetitive on what they're testing on for example for paper one the iy not only likes to repeat on text types but also the structures of these texts for example I once uh practice with a 2023 paper and the structure of the text was really similar to the paper that I encountered during this year's exams topics for paper 2 are also very recurrent seems like identity culture and Society appear very often so I would say it would be wise if you practice a few past papers um before the exam additionally if if you show what you practice to a teacher then your teacher could give you really valuable feedback for you to improve on number six take advantage of assignments that you can complete at home like your individual Oro or your HL essay if you're HL student because these are controllable assignments that you can use all your resources to make it perfect on and so these can become a great boost for your grade for HL students these take-home assignments are 40% of your total grade and 30% of for ESS students for me I scored a seven on both the individual oral and the HL essay and it really helped me to pull my grade up so to summarize check the rubric and course guide to know what each paper demands from you know a variety of literary techniques use a suitable writing structure practice makes perfect learn from examples from other people and be sure to take advantage of assignments that you can complete at home
