[00:08] (8.00s)
We're here. We're here. Awesome. Um, so
[00:12] (12.16s)
I am going to share my screen
[00:17] (17.24s)
here. Okay. Can everybody see that?
[00:22] (22.32s)
If everyone can see it, go ahead and put
[00:24] (24.24s)
it on the uh slideshow there. Yes.
[00:28] (28.80s)
Yay. I love it. Thumbs up.
[00:33] (33.28s)
Wow. I haven't presented a slideshow.
[00:35] (35.76s)
Upper upper right hand corner.
[00:37] (37.28s)
Slideshow. Just click slideshow. Okay,
[00:40] (40.16s)
there you go. I'm getting old. Okay,
[00:42] (42.96s)
perfect. Hi everyone. It's so good. I I
[00:45] (45.84s)
said in the chat, but I saw so many
[00:47] (47.60s)
familiar names in there. I'm so happy
[00:49] (49.44s)
that you're here. I'm so excited to
[00:51] (51.68s)
celebrate you. Um, so today, like I
[00:56] (56.00s)
said, is all about you and celebrating
[00:57] (57.52s)
the amazing things that you've done in
[00:59] (59.36s)
the last few years. Um, so a little bit
[01:02] (62.64s)
of an idea of how this event is going to
[01:04] (64.56s)
run. So, um, I am giving you the welcome
[01:07] (67.20s)
right now. Pretty soon we will welcome
[01:09] (69.04s)
one of our lovely families on to talk
[01:11] (71.28s)
with Coach Art a little bit about their
[01:12] (72.88s)
experience with the program, with the
[01:15] (75.12s)
college application process, all about
[01:17] (77.12s)
where they're going in the fall. Um, and
[01:19] (79.28s)
then we are going to go into a little
[01:21] (81.20s)
bit of a celebration. um kind of letting
[01:23] (83.52s)
you all know where people are going in
[01:25] (85.60s)
the fall. So um we compiled a big list
[01:28] (88.00s)
of schools where um folks got accepted
[01:30] (90.56s)
to. So I'm just going to kind of look at
[01:33] (93.12s)
those and and celebrate each one. Um and
[01:35] (95.60s)
then we are going to go through and do
[01:37] (97.68s)
an advice panel um with a couple of
[01:39] (99.84s)
students. So they're going to talk about
[01:41] (101.60s)
their experience again. Um maybe give
[01:43] (103.84s)
some advice to people who will be
[01:45] (105.44s)
applying soon. Um then we will have a
[01:48] (108.72s)
guest speaker. Um, and then like Selene
[01:51] (111.12s)
was saying in the beginning, we'll have
[01:52] (112.32s)
our raffle and then we will close. So,
[01:55] (115.88s)
um, again, I just want to reiterate, so
[01:58] (118.88s)
incredibly proud of all of the hard work
[02:00] (120.80s)
that the class of 2025 has put in. Um,
[02:04] (124.64s)
not even over the last year, but over
[02:06] (126.40s)
the last four years, over the last six
[02:08] (128.24s)
years if you were here in middle school.
[02:10] (130.00s)
Um, so just very appreciative to have
[02:13] (133.04s)
been a small part of your journey and
[02:14] (134.72s)
and so excited for you to um kind of
[02:18] (138.96s)
spread your wings. I guess that's a
[02:20] (140.64s)
cliche, but in the fall. So, um, I will
[02:24] (144.24s)
turn it over to Coach Art. Yay. Okay,
[02:28] (148.88s)
you guys have heard me already, but
[02:30] (150.24s)
again, I'm just so excited as if I was a
[02:33] (153.68s)
parent of the hundreds of students that
[02:36] (156.40s)
we've helped this year. Um, I don't know
[02:38] (158.88s)
if uh, Coach Christian or Coach Selene
[02:40] (160.72s)
if you could um, put on or invite as the
[02:45] (165.64s)
panelists our our guest family.
[02:50] (170.64s)
Yeah, do that and then I can go ahead
[02:52] (172.96s)
and introduce them.
[02:57] (177.76s)
And if if the guest family is here, um
[03:00] (180.88s)
can the twins if you guys could let uh
[03:03] (183.92s)
Coach Seline
[03:05] (185.40s)
know that uh you are here and that uh
[03:12] (192.16s)
you guys might be underneath different
[03:13] (193.60s)
names. If you guys just send me a
[03:15] (195.12s)
message real quick. Send a message real
[03:17] (197.20s)
quick. We have a lot of attendees, so
[03:19] (199.52s)
I'm trying to find you guys. Love it.
[03:21] (201.68s)
Love it. Love it.
[03:26] (206.64s)
One second.
[03:29] (209.28s)
Anyway, while we're we're getting that
[03:31] (211.04s)
all set up, of course, and getting the
[03:32] (212.64s)
guest family on, I do want to just again
[03:35] (215.28s)
thank everyone. This is our first
[03:39] (219.00s)
um signing day, which we hope to do this
[03:42] (222.16s)
every year. As everybody knows, we say
[03:44] (224.56s)
signing day because May 1st is signing
[03:47] (227.36s)
day in which uh students will commit uh
[03:50] (230.64s)
what they do is the it's called the SIR
[03:53] (233.20s)
uh where they officially uh send in uh
[03:56] (236.08s)
their um their notice saying that yes, I
[03:59] (239.92s)
am joining your school. Uh it's always a
[04:03] (243.68s)
uh exciting time for students because
[04:06] (246.00s)
they're able to again after the four
[04:09] (249.28s)
years of hard work that they've gone
[04:11] (251.04s)
through, they're able to sign on the
[04:13] (253.12s)
dotted line and and and and then get uh
[04:15] (255.92s)
to you know um uh and start thinking
[04:20] (260.00s)
about, you know, gosh, all of the
[04:22] (262.08s)
amazing things that you would think
[04:23] (263.44s)
about for colleges. Um, it's funny
[04:26] (266.08s)
because I remember doing that with my
[04:27] (267.60s)
kids and having to pick out the type of
[04:30] (270.96s)
I don't know comforter you need for your
[04:32] (272.72s)
for your bed. I think that's a big thing
[04:35] (275.12s)
and I remember my son saying, "Dad, it's
[04:37] (277.36s)
got to be the color of the school." I'm
[04:38] (278.80s)
like, "What?" Okay. So, I don't remember
[04:41] (281.12s)
that, but you know, it's one of those
[04:42] (282.72s)
things. Um, and then, you know, making
[04:44] (284.80s)
that tour, having that tour with the
[04:47] (287.12s)
with the family, uh, with the family and
[04:49] (289.04s)
going on the campus and enjoying the s
[04:51] (291.76s)
sites and scenes. And I know a lot of
[04:53] (293.44s)
the campuses out there have amazing um
[04:57] (297.56s)
orientations not only for the students
[04:59] (299.60s)
but the families. So uh take advantage
[05:02] (302.24s)
of that for those who are for those
[05:04] (304.40s)
families that are on uh take advantage
[05:06] (306.40s)
of that because the one thing is is that
[05:08] (308.80s)
um to learn about the school but then
[05:10] (310.96s)
also just to to celebrate you know and
[05:14] (314.08s)
and celebrate all of the amazing
[05:16] (316.48s)
accomplishments that your student has
[05:18] (318.32s)
gone through. So, um, so again, greatly
[05:21] (321.68s)
appreciate that. How we doing there,
[05:23] (323.92s)
Seline? I don't see them in
[05:27] (327.16s)
the attendees. Yeah. Okay. Why don't we
[05:30] (330.40s)
go ahead and um you can go ahead and
[05:32] (332.24s)
reach out to them. Yeah. And then, uh,
[05:34] (334.24s)
Kristen, why don't we go ahead and
[05:35] (335.84s)
switch over to our guest, our panelists,
[05:39] (339.12s)
and we can do that, and then we can get
[05:41] (341.20s)
in the other
[05:43] (343.64s)
family.
[05:45] (345.88s)
Oops. Keep going. Yeah, that sounds
[05:48] (348.72s)
great. So, um I think one of our
[05:51] (351.12s)
panelists is here at least. So, um I
[05:54] (354.64s)
think both of them are. I saw I think I
[05:56] (356.24s)
saw Awesome. Okay, I'll promote Zara to
[05:58] (358.84s)
panelists and then Venico. I don't see
[06:03] (363.44s)
Zara. I think I saw I saw Benia. I I see
[06:06] (366.96s)
Benio. Perfect. And I think I saw I lost
[06:10] (370.32s)
him. I lost him. Uh
[06:13] (373.56s)
oh, Ben. All right. Everyone knows of
[06:16] (376.32s)
course you know technical difficulties
[06:17] (377.92s)
this happens but it's all good. We're
[06:19] (379.28s)
we're here to celebrate and have fun. So
[06:21] (381.68s)
it wouldn't be asio. Are you here? Can
[06:24] (384.48s)
you send me a message? I can promote you
[06:26] (386.24s)
to panelist. I saw him for a second and
[06:28] (388.64s)
then he might have disconnected. Oh, he
[06:30] (390.88s)
was there. He was definitely there.
[06:41] (401.36s)
Well, if we want to, we can just get
[06:43] (403.12s)
started and then once we find Benio, we
[06:45] (405.68s)
can bring him up as well. Yeah, why
[06:47] (407.92s)
don't we go through the this Why don't
[06:50] (410.08s)
we go and and congratulate everybody on
[06:52] (412.16s)
the list of schools. So, why don't we go
[06:53] (413.84s)
and do that? Okay, perfect. So, we'll do
[06:57] (417.44s)
our little kind of our representation of
[07:00] (420.80s)
all of the different places we're going.
[07:02] (422.64s)
So, class of 2025, these are um the
[07:06] (426.48s)
colleges that we were accepted to. And
[07:09] (429.12s)
one thing to keep in mind is that this
[07:10] (430.72s)
list might not be completely
[07:14] (434.28s)
um what's the word I'm looking
[07:17] (437.32s)
for? It might not completely encapsulate
[07:19] (439.76s)
all of our students just because a lot
[07:21] (441.60s)
of them did not tell us where they were
[07:23] (443.36s)
going. They kind of got accepted and got
[07:25] (445.20s)
too excited to to want to tell us. So,
[07:28] (448.40s)
um but these are the ones we know of.
[07:30] (450.24s)
So, obviously a lot in California. Um,
[07:33] (453.04s)
and so, and if you're going to any of
[07:34] (454.56s)
these places, feel free to, um, throw up
[07:37] (457.28s)
an emoji or something like that. We've
[07:38] (458.88s)
got Calpali, Humbult, Pomona, Slow, Cal
[07:42] (462.16s)
State, Bakerfield, um, Chico,
[07:45] (465.40s)
Fullerton, and Long Beach, Los Angeles,
[07:48] (468.48s)
Monterey Bay, Sacramento, um, California
[07:51] (471.36s)
State, Channel Islands, um, Northridge,
[07:54] (474.16s)
Chapman University, Lyola, Mry Mount,
[07:56] (476.48s)
and Pepperdine.
[07:58] (478.32s)
We've also got Pittser, San Diego State,
[08:01] (481.60s)
um San Francisco State, San Jose, Santa
[08:04] (484.80s)
Clara University, Soma State, um and the
[08:08] (488.64s)
we've got Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, UCLA,
[08:12] (492.24s)
Merrced, Riverside, San Diego, Santa
[08:14] (494.64s)
Barbara, Santa Cruz, um University of
[08:18] (498.12s)
Leverne, San Diego, University of San
[08:20] (500.96s)
Francisco, um University of Southern
[08:23] (503.68s)
California. So those are all of our
[08:26] (506.08s)
schools that we know of in California.
[08:28] (508.36s)
So very very exciting. And now kind of a
[08:31] (511.52s)
little trip across the country here um
[08:34] (514.56s)
across the world actually because we've
[08:36] (516.32s)
got Arizona State University, the
[08:38] (518.48s)
University of British Columbia, um
[08:40] (520.96s)
University of Colorado Boulder, Embry
[08:43] (523.76s)
Riddle, University of Florida,
[08:46] (526.08s)
University of Miami, um the Georgia
[08:48] (528.96s)
Institute of
[08:50] (530.36s)
Technology, Boise State University, um
[08:53] (533.44s)
the University of Chicago, um the
[08:56] (536.08s)
University of Illinois, Orbana
[08:57] (537.96s)
Champagne, Indiana University,
[09:00] (540.92s)
Purdue, University of Notre Dame, Tulain
[09:05] (545.00s)
University, University of Maryland, MIT,
[09:09] (549.72s)
Northeastern, University of
[09:11] (551.36s)
Massachusetts, Amherst. Um, and for
[09:15] (555.12s)
those of you who know me, I'm a
[09:16] (556.40s)
Michigander. So, we also have MSU, uh,
[09:19] (559.60s)
Michigan State University, and U of M go
[09:21] (561.84s)
blue on here. Um, University of Nevada,
[09:24] (564.84s)
Reno, Rutgers University, Cornell,
[09:28] (568.44s)
Florida, Hamilton College, New York
[09:31] (571.36s)
University, Renilier Poly Techchnic
[09:33] (573.72s)
Institute, Rochester Institute of
[09:36] (576.00s)
Technology, Stonybrook University at
[09:38] (578.36s)
Buffalo, Elon University, UNCC Chapel
[09:41] (581.44s)
Hill, um, Case Western, OSU, which
[09:45] (585.92s)
again, as a Michigander, congratulations
[09:48] (588.32s)
for being
[09:49] (589.72s)
accepted. It's okay.
[09:52] (592.72s)
Um, Oregon, we've got University of
[09:54] (594.64s)
Oregon, uh, Carnegie Melon, Drexel,
[09:57] (597.20s)
Pennsylvania State, University of
[09:59] (599.44s)
Pennsylvania, University of Pittsburgh,
[10:02] (602.16s)
South Carolina State, Baylor, Rice,
[10:04] (604.88s)
Texas A&M, Texas Christian, UT Austin,
[10:08] (608.64s)
UT Dallas, University of Washington,
[10:11] (611.92s)
American University, George Washington
[10:14] (614.00s)
University, and University of Wisconsin.
[10:16] (616.96s)
So, oh my goodness, so many amazing
[10:20] (620.16s)
institutions that our students have been
[10:21] (621.68s)
accepted to. Again, just reading over
[10:24] (624.48s)
that list and kind of picturing the
[10:26] (626.08s)
students who are going to each place
[10:27] (627.96s)
just I don't know.
[10:30] (630.44s)
I'm it it makes me a little bit
[10:32] (632.48s)
emotional because I'm just I'm so very
[10:34] (634.24s)
proud of each of you and and everything
[10:36] (636.64s)
you've accomplished. So, um so that is
[10:39] (639.44s)
our list of institutions.
[10:44] (644.80s)
Congratulations. Oh my gosh, that's
[10:46] (646.64s)
amazing. I I you know, it's funny when
[10:49] (649.04s)
we sit here and uh we just I I thought
[10:52] (652.88s)
about you said Kristen as being
[10:54] (654.68s)
emotional, you know, three or four years
[10:57] (657.12s)
ago. Uh it was we still had kind of
[11:00] (660.88s)
these schools, but we never really
[11:02] (662.64s)
documented them like we did here. And uh
[11:06] (666.16s)
to see that that list of amazing
[11:08] (668.16s)
accomplishments from all the students,
[11:09] (669.44s)
that's incredible. So why don't we go
[11:12] (672.00s)
ahead and Yeah. and uh move on to our
[11:14] (674.72s)
student panel. Were we able to get in
[11:17] (677.20s)
connection? There's been a lot of
[11:19] (679.20s)
unfortunately our guest family uh that
[11:21] (681.84s)
were going to join us, they had an
[11:23] (683.76s)
emergency, so unfortunately they are not
[11:26] (686.16s)
able to join us today. It's a last
[11:27] (687.76s)
minute thing. Um we're bummed of course,
[11:30] (690.16s)
but we wish them absolute luck. Um if we
[11:33] (693.04s)
can get do how are we doing there Selene
[11:35] (695.12s)
on Ben Bonio and he's here. They're both
[11:38] (698.24s)
here. They're in panelists right now.
[11:39] (699.68s)
Excellent. All right. Are they the pan
[11:42] (702.16s)
pan? Oh, yay. Look at that. Zara, hey,
[11:45] (705.44s)
how you
[11:46] (706.44s)
doing? And Benio. And one thing I will
[11:50] (710.16s)
say, too, is if you wanted any
[11:52] (712.84s)
um any conversation with the the family
[11:56] (716.40s)
that we are going to have up here, we
[11:58] (718.08s)
actually have um on our YouTube channel
[12:00] (720.64s)
an interview with at least one of them.
[12:02] (722.96s)
I wasn't sure about the other one. Yes.
[12:05] (725.68s)
Um and then they were also featured on
[12:08] (728.08s)
their local news station as well. So,
[12:10] (730.56s)
some some opportunities for you to see
[12:12] (732.72s)
them there as well in those spaces. So,
[12:15] (735.20s)
they are incredible. So, make sure you
[12:16] (736.88s)
go to YouTube and look those up. They're
[12:18] (738.64s)
great. Um, so we will have our student
[12:23] (743.04s)
panel now. So, we've got Zara and Benio
[12:27] (747.80s)
here. So, very, very excited to have you
[12:30] (750.56s)
both. Um, if you just want to do a quick
[12:32] (752.96s)
introduction of yourself, your name,
[12:34] (754.80s)
maybe where you're going in the fall,
[12:37] (757.08s)
um, I won't make you do a fun fact
[12:39] (759.36s)
because I know that those are sometimes
[12:40] (760.80s)
stressful on the spot. So, if you just
[12:42] (762.40s)
want to say your name and where you're
[12:43] (763.60s)
going in the fall, that's totally fine.
[12:46] (766.40s)
Yeah, sure. Um, hi, my name is Zara. I'm
[12:50] (770.00s)
going to UCLA for biology. I'm super
[12:53] (773.00s)
excited. Um, yeah, that's who I am.
[12:56] (776.40s)
Awesome.
[12:59] (779.20s)
Uh, hi everyone. My name is Benia.
[13:08] (788.96s)
Oh boy. Oh, seems like Benio is breaking
[13:12] (792.08s)
up a little bit. Can you repeat that one
[13:13] (793.68s)
more time? Where you're going?
[13:24] (804.48s)
Awesome. It's still a little bit
[13:26] (806.24s)
breaking up, but I heard UCLA
[13:29] (809.05s)
[Laughter]
[13:32] (812.40s)
Wonderful. So, just a couple of
[13:34] (814.64s)
questions for you here.
[13:36] (816.60s)
Um, kind of about your general
[13:38] (818.88s)
experience with the college application
[13:40] (820.64s)
process, your experience with the
[13:42] (822.80s)
coaching program, and maybe a piece of
[13:45] (825.20s)
advice that you have for anybody else
[13:46] (826.88s)
who might be going through this. So, the
[13:48] (828.88s)
first question I'll ask you is, what was
[13:51] (831.84s)
the college application process like for
[13:53] (833.92s)
you? and do you have any unique insights
[13:56] (836.16s)
that you might share with our attendees
[13:59] (839.12s)
here um about what you experienced?
[14:03] (843.60s)
Um I think that the college process was
[14:06] (846.88s)
definitely a lot going into it. I think
[14:09] (849.36s)
when I was first starting as like a
[14:11] (851.44s)
junior, like looking at everything that
[14:12] (852.88s)
needed to get done, it was super
[14:15] (855.52s)
overwhelming. And I think that the
[14:17] (857.76s)
coaching here has really really helped
[14:19] (859.76s)
me like get like organize what exactly I
[14:23] (863.44s)
needed to get done and really put it
[14:25] (865.76s)
into a way that was able for me to like
[14:29] (869.92s)
break down and actually accomplish. Um,
[14:32] (872.80s)
I think that,
[14:35] (875.96s)
uh, my advice for people going into this
[14:39] (879.12s)
process is definitely start early. Start
[14:42] (882.80s)
really early. um because it takes a lot
[14:46] (886.08s)
of time to you're you're essentially
[14:48] (888.80s)
putting your entire self into an
[14:52] (892.08s)
application of like I think for the UC
[14:54] (894.64s)
application you only have like 1,400
[14:57] (897.28s)
words to like describe who you are as a
[15:00] (900.48s)
person to see if you're fit for this
[15:02] (902.24s)
college and that's like that's not a lot
[15:04] (904.80s)
of words when you come down to it and
[15:06] (906.96s)
getting started early and like you know
[15:09] (909.84s)
being able to get all the ideas out
[15:11] (911.84s)
there and then work on what's the best
[15:14] (914.08s)
one really will help you so much. And
[15:17] (917.04s)
then also know that like it's a process.
[15:19] (919.84s)
It takes a lot of time. There is like
[15:22] (922.32s)
your first draft won't be good, your
[15:23] (923.84s)
second draft won't be good. Like it'll
[15:25] (925.28s)
it's going to take a while before you
[15:26] (926.88s)
like really are able to encapsulate who
[15:29] (929.20s)
you are into like a 350, you know, word
[15:36] (936.08s)
Yeah, absolutely. Well, and that's
[15:37] (937.76s)
something that we talked about a lot, I
[15:40] (940.16s)
know, during essay season is that 350
[15:43] (943.12s)
words might seem like quite a bit when
[15:45] (945.36s)
you're first starting, but then you
[15:46] (946.80s)
realize how much you really have to put
[15:48] (948.48s)
into each of those and it's like, oh my
[15:50] (950.64s)
gosh, I could write 700 words easy. No
[15:52] (952.96s)
problem. It's like, no, you have to cut
[15:54] (954.64s)
that in half. So, very, very good. Um,
[15:58] (958.40s)
Benio, how about you? What was your
[16:01] (961.36s)
experience like with the college
[16:02] (962.88s)
application process? Do you have any
[16:04] (964.96s)
insights you'd like to share?
[16:22] (982.00s)
kind of
[16:25] (985.52s)
I'm so sorry. Um I don't know if you can
[16:28] (988.88s)
hear me, but I think um my number one
[16:31] (991.92s)
tip would just be to like be um open to
[16:34] (994.96s)
asking for help. I think there's a lot
[16:37] (997.20s)
of great resources with college
[16:38] (998.80s)
admission secrets. One of the best ones
[16:40] (1000.64s)
for me was the Google form that we could
[16:42] (1002.80s)
use where all the um coaches would like
[16:45] (1005.52s)
look at our essays and give us feedback.
[16:47] (1007.60s)
That was really helpful, especially in
[16:49] (1009.84s)
crunch time where there was applications
[16:51] (1011.84s)
due really soon and I needed extra help
[16:53] (1013.52s)
on my supplements and my essays because
[16:55] (1015.76s)
honestly I think that is one of the most
[16:57] (1017.68s)
like um important parts of your college
[17:00] (1020.36s)
application. Um obviously start early
[17:03] (1023.84s)
like there's um just essays in general
[17:07] (1027.12s)
are the I'd say like the hardest part
[17:08] (1028.88s)
about a college application which are my
[17:11] (1031.60s)
main thing at college secrets. There's
[17:13] (1033.60s)
so many coaches here for you guys to use
[17:16] (1036.08s)
and they're all so nice and I just think
[17:18] (1038.08s)
it's like a great resource and I wish I
[17:20] (1040.80s)
also used it more but I can like tell
[17:25] (1045.20s)
other people or tell like other classes
[17:28] (1048.08s)
that I can hope for them to use it too.
[17:33] (1053.76s)
awesome. Thank you. Um and actually we
[17:36] (1056.88s)
heard all of that so that that was good.
[17:38] (1058.88s)
Thank you so much. Um, so tell me a
[17:42] (1062.72s)
little bit about what it was
[17:45] (1065.48s)
like. I I know one of the most difficult
[17:48] (1068.00s)
parts a lot of the time during the
[17:49] (1069.36s)
application process isn't necessarily
[17:50] (1070.96s)
the part where you're turning them in,
[17:52] (1072.32s)
but it's the waiting part. So, what was
[17:54] (1074.48s)
it like kind of what did you feel like
[17:56] (1076.56s)
after you finished turning in
[17:58] (1078.00s)
applications?
[18:01] (1081.96s)
Um, I I think that everyone should take
[18:05] (1085.36s)
this advice. I did my best to keep it
[18:07] (1087.84s)
out of my mind once I turned it in. I
[18:10] (1090.16s)
was like at at that point you've done
[18:12] (1092.96s)
like everything that you possibly can.
[18:14] (1094.96s)
You've made all the you know you've this
[18:17] (1097.60s)
is your whole four last four years and
[18:19] (1099.92s)
you've done everything you can and just
[18:21] (1101.44s)
like do your best to like not think
[18:23] (1103.04s)
about it. Focus like maybe go out more
[18:25] (1105.04s)
with your friends after you know like
[18:26] (1106.32s)
you've done all this work and stuff. And
[18:28] (1108.16s)
then also, this might be a little bit
[18:30] (1110.32s)
controversial, but I personally would
[18:32] (1112.88s)
not talk about it with your friends
[18:35] (1115.20s)
because I was kind of lucky. My friend
[18:36] (1116.88s)
group wasn't as, you know, like they had
[18:39] (1119.28s)
like different paths set out for them,
[18:40] (1120.64s)
but I had a few friends who were like
[18:42] (1122.32s)
also with a lot of kids who wanted to go
[18:43] (1123.92s)
to some, you know, some really um
[18:45] (1125.92s)
prestigious colleges and it kind of
[18:48] (1128.32s)
talking about it more kind of hurt them
[18:50] (1130.32s)
because it kind of in like made space
[18:52] (1132.64s)
for some hurt feelings. So, I would say
[18:54] (1134.40s)
put it out of your head, have some fun,
[18:56] (1136.56s)
focus on your schoolwork, just like, you
[18:58] (1138.32s)
know, enjoy the rest of your senior
[19:00] (1140.24s)
year. That's what I would say.
[19:03] (1143.00s)
Awesome. And Benia, what about you?
[19:08] (1148.96s)
Yeah, I think Zara really said it really
[19:11] (1151.12s)
well. Um, I think it's just important to
[19:13] (1153.92s)
enjoy the last parts of your senior year
[19:16] (1156.24s)
because there's not going to be another
[19:17] (1157.60s)
time in your life like it. Enjoy
[19:19] (1159.92s)
your time with your friends.
[19:22] (1162.52s)
Um, for me also, like I started like
[19:25] (1165.92s)
getting excited about college, just like
[19:27] (1167.92s)
looking into life. Um, I went to a
[19:30] (1170.56s)
couple like colleges where I knew I had
[19:32] (1172.08s)
friends to like see what their life was
[19:34] (1174.16s)
like before. Um, and also that's also
[19:38] (1178.00s)
really good advice about not telling
[19:39] (1179.28s)
people. I didn't tell people at all
[19:41] (1181.92s)
where I was applying really except for
[19:43] (1183.84s)
like my family and my closest friends
[19:45] (1185.92s)
cuz I didn't want there to be like hard
[19:47] (1187.76s)
feelings later on with like acceptances
[19:49] (1189.52s)
or whatever. But I think it should be
[19:52] (1192.16s)
really like a a personal journey. Um and
[19:56] (1196.08s)
yeah, I just like enjoy your your last
[19:58] (1198.96s)
part of senior year.
[20:02] (1202.20s)
Awesome. Yeah. Yeah. Very very good
[20:04] (1204.48s)
advice. I think and that's one thing
[20:06] (1206.56s)
there's a cliche that I learned when um
[20:08] (1208.72s)
I was in school and it's all about
[20:11] (1211.44s)
comparison being the thief of joy. So,
[20:14] (1214.00s)
if you're excited about where you're
[20:15] (1215.52s)
going, um don't let anybody else take
[20:17] (1217.76s)
that joy away from you because just just
[20:20] (1220.88s)
the act of going for education or going
[20:23] (1223.60s)
for higher education is such a huge
[20:25] (1225.60s)
thing in and of itself. So, um feel joy,
[20:29] (1229.60s)
celebrate yourself, hype yourself up. Um
[20:33] (1233.12s)
the last question I will ask you is what
[20:36] (1236.40s)
was it like trying to decide where to go
[20:39] (1239.04s)
in the fall?
[20:43] (1243.52s)
Um, for me it was it was kind of a
[20:47] (1247.04s)
difficult decision. I was between a few
[20:51] (1251.60s)
UC's and I think that what I really
[20:54] (1254.80s)
thought about was
[20:56] (1256.52s)
like where I would be happy the most and
[20:59] (1259.68s)
also like the community of people that I
[21:02] (1262.00s)
was going to be with. Um, like I really
[21:04] (1264.64s)
chose UCLA because every single person
[21:08] (1268.24s)
who I know that goes there is just such
[21:10] (1270.08s)
a passionate and
[21:11] (1271.64s)
like like a passionate person and they
[21:14] (1274.32s)
really care about what they do and they
[21:16] (1276.80s)
care about like everything in their
[21:18] (1278.40s)
life, their activities, their their
[21:20] (1280.40s)
friends and stuff and I think that
[21:21] (1281.52s)
that's something that I really wanted to
[21:22] (1282.96s)
bring into my life. And then also I you
[21:26] (1286.64s)
know I did a lot of the like things like
[21:28] (1288.48s)
okay what location do I want to go in?
[21:30] (1290.48s)
What sort of like do I want a big city?
[21:32] (1292.08s)
you in a small city. I think that's all
[21:34] (1294.08s)
very important. And then also like going
[21:35] (1295.84s)
to the campus and actually seriously
[21:38] (1298.72s)
seeing everything. I also watched a lot
[21:41] (1301.44s)
of Tik Toks and YouTube videos about
[21:43] (1303.12s)
like oh the day in my life of like a
[21:45] (1305.28s)
UCLA student or the day in my life of a
[21:46] (1306.96s)
UC San Diego student and just like all
[21:48] (1308.88s)
those things to sort of see like
[21:50] (1310.08s)
actually what does life like? And then
[21:52] (1312.32s)
also I talked to a lot of my friends to
[21:54] (1314.32s)
be like okay what is your like this
[21:55] (1315.92s)
person goes here what is your thoughts
[21:57] (1317.28s)
about this? this person is in my major.
[21:59] (1319.44s)
And then also like hearing about the
[22:01] (1321.04s)
different programs at UCLA, like I'm
[22:02] (1322.80s)
super interested in sports medicine and
[22:04] (1324.56s)
they have a really really amazing sports
[22:06] (1326.40s)
med program that I'm hoping to get into.
[22:07] (1327.84s)
So like all those sort of factors like
[22:09] (1329.84s)
weighing everything out, that's kind of
[22:12] (1332.00s)
what helped influence my decision to go
[22:14] (1334.16s)
to UCLA.
[22:16] (1336.52s)
Awesome. Wonderful. Well, I think we
[22:19] (1339.52s)
lost Benio, but um I just wanted to say,
[22:23] (1343.44s)
you know, thank you so so much for
[22:26] (1346.08s)
taking the time to come up and talk with
[22:27] (1347.76s)
us, Zara. Um you have been really
[22:30] (1350.16s)
phenomenal. Um I and I know I speak for
[22:33] (1353.36s)
a lot of the other coaches as well, but
[22:35] (1355.12s)
I have so enjoyed working with you,
[22:37] (1357.60s)
chatting with you, you know, staying
[22:39] (1359.44s)
caught up on what's going on and all
[22:41] (1361.04s)
that good stuff. So, just appreciate you
[22:43] (1363.68s)
and your hard work so so so much.
[22:46] (1366.56s)
Um, thank you guys so much. Like
[22:48] (1368.64s)
seriously, this has been you've been so
[22:51] (1371.12s)
helpful to me and I've loved working
[22:52] (1372.56s)
with every single one of your coaches.
[22:54] (1374.16s)
Like it's been such an amazing
[22:56] (1376.60s)
experience. So, thank you so much.
[22:58] (1378.80s)
Congratulations, Zara. Thank you. Thank
[23:01] (1381.04s)
you. Awesome. And so, um, Coach Art is
[23:04] (1384.88s)
actually going to, um, speak with a
[23:07] (1387.20s)
student as well. We have Pashant here.
[23:09] (1389.68s)
So, I will hand it over to Coach Art.
[23:12] (1392.08s)
Yes. Oh my gosh. Uh again I I I am
[23:15] (1395.52s)
beaming like you can't see my heart
[23:17] (1397.44s)
pounding here because so amazing for our
[23:20] (1400.08s)
students here but um we had I have a the
[23:23] (1403.44s)
opportunity to interview your Pashant.
[23:26] (1406.44s)
Pashant first of all why don't you give
[23:28] (1408.64s)
a little bit of introduction of who you
[23:30] (1410.48s)
are. All right. Uh hi everyone. My name
[23:33] (1413.44s)
is Pashant Vad. I'm going to be
[23:34] (1414.96s)
attending UC Berkeley this fall.
[23:38] (1418.16s)
Go Bears. Go Bears. Yeah. A couple
[23:40] (1420.64s)
things about me is I love to hang out
[23:42] (1422.80s)
with my friends. I play the violin and
[23:44] (1424.80s)
one of my hobbies includes gardening. So
[23:47] (1427.28s)
yeah, gardening. Love it. Love it. Love
[23:49] (1429.76s)
it. Love it. So Pashant, I know we kind
[23:52] (1432.16s)
of talked with the students, but I want
[23:53] (1433.84s)
to give you a little bit. So um a
[23:56] (1436.64s)
question for you when you were going to
[24:00] (1440.92s)
this, you know, process, right? What was
[24:04] (1444.24s)
your mindset? What were you thinking
[24:06] (1446.32s)
saying, "Okay, I'm gonna get into this."
[24:08] (1448.16s)
What was that? Right. Um, so like some
[24:11] (1451.12s)
of the other students that said on this
[24:12] (1452.64s)
panel, I was also pretty overwhelmed
[24:14] (1454.32s)
with the whole college application
[24:15] (1455.84s)
process at the start, it was definitely
[24:17] (1457.92s)
pretty stressful because there was this
[24:19] (1459.36s)
whole like idea of oh, like getting into
[24:21] (1461.36s)
top colleges, it's just getting like
[24:22] (1462.80s)
more and more competitive. But I think
[24:25] (1465.60s)
like one thing that kind of helped me
[24:27] (1467.36s)
like succeed was like starting early and
[24:29] (1469.76s)
kind of working with you guys when it
[24:30] (1470.96s)
came to like brainstorming and all that
[24:32] (1472.40s)
stuff. So having that mindset of like,
[24:34] (1474.72s)
oh, I'm going to like meet all my
[24:36] (1476.24s)
deadlines, like get through with all my
[24:38] (1478.08s)
internal deadlines and make sure that
[24:39] (1479.68s)
like I'm on top of my work definitely
[24:41] (1481.60s)
helped me a lot in terms of the college
[24:43] (1483.68s)
admissions process. And I think another
[24:45] (1485.84s)
thing that helped me was staying genuine
[24:47] (1487.68s)
throughout the whole thing. Uh, I didn't
[24:49] (1489.68s)
really want to like paint myself as
[24:51] (1491.28s)
someone I was not in the college
[24:52] (1492.96s)
application process. I wanted to be true
[24:54] (1494.48s)
to myself because if a college is taking
[24:56] (1496.80s)
me for someone I'm not, then I don't
[24:58] (1498.56s)
think I'd be a good fit there.
[25:01] (1501.12s)
Oh my gosh. Okay, I I I you know, okay,
[25:04] (1504.40s)
everybody, I hope all the people that
[25:06] (1506.48s)
are listening heard what Pashant said
[25:08] (1508.72s)
because it's so very true. I keep saying
[25:11] (1511.84s)
this. Don't try to figure out what the
[25:14] (1514.48s)
reader wants to hear, but tell them what
[25:16] (1516.96s)
you want to tell them. And it's
[25:18] (1518.72s)
absolutely true. Be true to yourself
[25:20] (1520.88s)
because they're going to admit you based
[25:23] (1523.60s)
on what you put on that paper. And if it
[25:26] (1526.08s)
doesn't match, then you're you may have
[25:28] (1528.40s)
a difficult time at that school. So for
[25:30] (1530.40s)
Sean, I'm curious. Um, first of all,
[25:33] (1533.36s)
everyone is just they're like, "What
[25:35] (1535.36s)
what is he going to major in?" So what
[25:36] (1536.96s)
what's what are you majoring at at
[25:38] (1538.96s)
Berkeley? I'm going to be studying data
[25:40] (1540.88s)
science. Data science. Okay. It's not,
[25:44] (1544.16s)
you know, I don't know. It's not very
[25:45] (1545.68s)
popular. Uh, just kidding. uh one of the
[25:48] (1548.56s)
most popular I mean data science,
[25:52] (1552.00s)
computer science uh probably very
[25:54] (1554.88s)
daunting because we always say you know
[25:56] (1556.96s)
that's one of the most highly impacted
[25:58] (1558.76s)
majors. Um what are some things that you
[26:01] (1561.64s)
did okay to that are kind of in line
[26:05] (1565.12s)
with data science because I'm sure
[26:06] (1566.72s)
there's a lot of families and students
[26:08] (1568.80s)
out there that are interested. What are
[26:10] (1570.24s)
things that you did? Yeah. So I guess
[26:13] (1573.04s)
like one thing a lot of families like or
[26:14] (1574.72s)
a lot of people have expressed to me
[26:15] (1575.76s)
when they ask this question is a lot of
[26:17] (1577.12s)
people say that data science is such a
[26:18] (1578.80s)
new major so there's like not really
[26:20] (1580.64s)
much you can do but I don't think that's
[26:22] (1582.64s)
true. There's quite actually a lot of
[26:24] (1584.40s)
things that I was able to do that line
[26:26] (1586.48s)
up with data science. One of which being
[26:28] (1588.72s)
hackathons. So for me I feel like one of
[26:31] (1591.12s)
my unique parts of my application was
[26:33] (1593.36s)
competing in hackathons and actually
[26:35] (1595.52s)
like talking about like the projects I
[26:37] (1597.12s)
built. So by competing in hackathons
[26:39] (1599.84s)
like I talked about how I was able to
[26:41] (1601.36s)
like improve my skills, win awards for
[26:43] (1603.60s)
like the impactful projects I made. So
[26:45] (1605.76s)
that was kind of like the coding side.
[26:47] (1607.92s)
Another thing that I did was an
[26:50] (1610.08s)
internship with the startup company and
[26:52] (1612.56s)
through that internship I actually was
[26:54] (1614.80s)
able to do kind of like what a data
[26:56] (1616.96s)
analyst would do basically almost
[26:58] (1618.56s)
shadowing a software engineer like data
[27:00] (1620.48s)
analyst. So I would work with data sets
[27:03] (1623.04s)
kind of like analyze like what they
[27:04] (1624.72s)
would like kind of the work they would
[27:06] (1626.64s)
give me and like kind of look at the
[27:08] (1628.16s)
data sets and do stuff like that kind of
[27:09] (1629.92s)
like filling in the shoes of what a data
[27:11] (1631.68s)
analyst would do after college. And
[27:14] (1634.00s)
lastly, I think the biggest thing that I
[27:16] (1636.00s)
helped do was uh personal projects. uh
[27:19] (1639.04s)
personal projects especially when it
[27:20] (1640.72s)
came to the coding definitely like kind
[27:22] (1642.88s)
of gave me an edge in the college
[27:24] (1644.40s)
application process because you were
[27:26] (1646.40s)
kind of like putting your own like ideas
[27:28] (1648.40s)
into what you want to build and you're
[27:29] (1649.76s)
able to kind of present that. So I think
[27:31] (1651.60s)
those three things al together very
[27:33] (1653.28s)
coding focused kind of helped um me do
[27:36] (1656.40s)
like data science extracurriculars.
[27:38] (1658.80s)
Okay. So I'm going to flip flip this now
[27:40] (1660.64s)
pashant because some people are like oh
[27:42] (1662.40s)
gosh I got to do all this data science.
[27:44] (1664.32s)
What is one thing that you did that is
[27:46] (1666.24s)
not related to your major? Yeah. Uh one
[27:49] (1669.84s)
thing that I didn't do that was related
[27:51] (1671.12s)
to my major was uh student government or
[27:53] (1673.44s)
ASB. Okay. Um I think like for me like I
[27:56] (1676.88s)
was able to kind of show and showcase my
[27:58] (1678.96s)
leadership experience by kind of serving
[28:01] (1681.44s)
my like like my student government for
[28:04] (1684.32s)
the last four years. And by doing that I
[28:07] (1687.04s)
was able to like get a lot of like
[28:08] (1688.48s)
opportunities that were very unique to
[28:10] (1690.00s)
student government. for example, uh, one
[28:12] (1692.08s)
of the most cool opportunities I had as
[28:14] (1694.08s)
an ASB member was I got to help with the
[28:16] (1696.96s)
hiring process of two of our current
[28:18] (1698.48s)
assistant principles. So, just kind of
[28:20] (1700.96s)
doing stuff that gives back to my school
[28:22] (1702.56s)
and kind of like showcasing that I'm
[28:24] (1704.56s)
involved in my community also helped me.
[28:27] (1707.52s)
Okay. What is one thing that kind of
[28:30] (1710.24s)
going into this process that you had a
[28:34] (1714.08s)
misconception about? Like you thought,
[28:36] (1716.80s)
"Oh, this is really what it is." And
[28:38] (1718.48s)
then going through the process, you're
[28:40] (1720.08s)
like, "Oh my gosh, that wasn't true at
[28:41] (1721.68s)
all." I think the biggest thing that I
[28:44] (1724.80s)
think I already mentioned it, but like
[28:46] (1726.00s)
the biggest thing that I went into, like
[28:48] (1728.16s)
the biggest misconception I had was kind
[28:50] (1730.32s)
of like writing your application for
[28:52] (1732.48s)
what the admissions officers want to see
[28:54] (1734.00s)
and not who you are. I think kind of
[28:56] (1736.80s)
initially when I was writing my essays
[28:59] (1739.52s)
um like actually funny story like one of
[29:01] (1741.36s)
the first essays I tried writing was
[29:02] (1742.88s)
about music and I remember I had this
[29:05] (1745.60s)
conversation with coach art and I told
[29:07] (1747.04s)
him like I know music is a very used
[29:09] (1749.28s)
topic in college admissions so like
[29:10] (1750.96s)
should I even consider writing it
[29:12] (1752.56s)
because so many students talk about it
[29:14] (1754.64s)
and coach art was the one who told me if
[29:16] (1756.80s)
you're genuine and passionate about
[29:18] (1758.08s)
music you should write about it because
[29:19] (1759.60s)
it's not going to be it's not going to
[29:21] (1761.44s)
be what they want to see it's going to
[29:22] (1762.80s)
be who you are that they see so That was
[29:25] (1765.60s)
probably the biggest misconception I had
[29:27] (1767.12s)
that quickly was debunked and it helped
[29:29] (1769.28s)
open my eyes in like what the college
[29:30] (1770.96s)
admission process really was.
[29:33] (1773.92s)
It makes me so proud. Um, so what was
[29:38] (1778.32s)
the biggest kind of stressful part of
[29:40] (1780.16s)
the whole thing? Uh, I would say the
[29:42] (1782.88s)
most stressful part honestly for me
[29:45] (1785.04s)
wasn't even the application writing
[29:46] (1786.64s)
process. It was test scores for me. um
[29:49] (1789.52s)
like the standardized tests and kind of
[29:51] (1791.60s)
like making sure that like oh like I
[29:53] (1793.84s)
need to get my test scores up or like
[29:56] (1796.00s)
that was also kind of like a
[29:57] (1797.12s)
misconception that oh you need like that
[29:58] (1798.64s)
perfect SAT to get into these top
[30:00] (1800.32s)
colleges but at least for me like for
[30:02] (1802.80s)
some moments of my like college
[30:04] (1804.48s)
application process I was pretty
[30:05] (1805.68s)
stressed about my test scores. Okay. So
[30:08] (1808.64s)
I'm going to give you I'm going to give
[30:10] (1810.48s)
you the last question here. Okay. uh you
[30:13] (1813.92s)
are now talking to millions of students
[30:16] (1816.96s)
out in the universe here. Yeah. Um and
[30:19] (1819.84s)
you have to give one piece of advice on
[30:22] (1822.64s)
you know again the whole process right.
[30:25] (1825.60s)
What is Pashant's universal tip in being
[30:30] (1830.16s)
successful at this process?
[30:33] (1833.04s)
Um I would say start early and be
[30:35] (1835.68s)
yourself. I really can't say it enough.
[30:38] (1838.64s)
Being yourself will be do more good to
[30:41] (1841.12s)
you than harm because if you're really
[30:42] (1842.72s)
showcasing who you are, you'll have that
[30:44] (1844.64s)
edge on other people because every
[30:46] (1846.24s)
person is unique. Every person has a
[30:48] (1848.40s)
story to tell. You just have to find it.
[30:50] (1850.32s)
And once you're able to do that, if
[30:52] (1852.32s)
you're able to stay on top of your work,
[30:53] (1853.84s)
start early, and make sure you're
[30:55] (1855.36s)
nailing all those essays, getting them
[30:57] (1857.04s)
checked by whoever it is, and having an
[30:59] (1859.76s)
open mind throughout the whole thing,
[31:01] (1861.12s)
you'll be successful.
[31:03] (1863.20s)
Well, again, Pashant, as as if you were
[31:05] (1865.92s)
my own son, I'm so proud of you.
[31:08] (1868.20s)
Congratulations. Go Bears. UC Berkeley
[31:11] (1871.36s)
is an incredible school. Um I will tell
[31:14] (1874.48s)
you for everybody that's out there. Uh
[31:17] (1877.28s)
the you know I we worked with Pashant
[31:19] (1879.76s)
for probably about a couple years now.
[31:21] (1881.36s)
Is that correct, Pashant? Yeah, like a
[31:22] (1882.56s)
year and a half. A couple year. Yeah, a
[31:23] (1883.76s)
year and a half. And I remember you
[31:25] (1885.84s)
starting and I I I do remember the
[31:28] (1888.16s)
question when you said, "Hey, what
[31:29] (1889.68s)
should I really be doing this?" And I
[31:31] (1891.04s)
remember your hesitancy. Yeah. But now
[31:34] (1894.40s)
looking at you a year and a half later,
[31:36] (1896.48s)
I mean, you're beaming. You are
[31:39] (1899.12s)
confident like what we talked about,
[31:40] (1900.80s)
right? We said, "Hey, be confident about
[31:43] (1903.12s)
yourself. Be confident about who you
[31:44] (1904.64s)
are, what you're doing." And I just feel
[31:47] (1907.12s)
so proud that you're going to do amazing
[31:49] (1909.28s)
things. Uh, and I know all of the things
[31:51] (1911.60s)
that you've accomplished so far, but
[31:53] (1913.68s)
it's going to be incredible, uh, you
[31:55] (1915.68s)
know, at Berkeley and you're going to be
[31:57] (1917.20s)
amongst, you know, incredible
[31:58] (1918.64s)
individuals that will really push you,
[32:01] (1921.12s)
um, towards your future. So,
[32:02] (1922.72s)
congratulations, Prashant. Uh, go Bears.
[32:05] (1925.92s)
And, uh, I will tell you, you know, go
[32:07] (1927.84s)
get them, man, because I know you're
[32:09] (1929.04s)
going to do it. Thank you so much, Coach
[32:10] (1930.80s)
R. And thank you, Elock team, for having
[32:12] (1932.80s)
me. Yeah. Awesome. Alrighty.
[32:17] (1937.08s)
Woo! Signing day, Coach Kristen. H.
[32:22] (1942.32s)
Okay, there you go. Surprise. Am I the
[32:24] (1944.56s)
guest speaker?
[32:25] (1945.99s)
[Laughter]
[32:27] (1947.76s)
I'm the guest speaker. Okay, everybody.
[32:29] (1949.52s)
Yes, I'm the guest speaker. Um, so I'm
[32:32] (1952.24s)
going to go ahead and um I did want to
[32:35] (1955.28s)
give a little bit of a message to those
[32:37] (1957.36s)
who are listening. This goes out to all
[32:39] (1959.92s)
of the class of uh
[32:42] (1962.92s)
2025, those who are here, those who are
[32:46] (1966.16s)
not here, um students that are um you
[32:50] (1970.32s)
know planning and finishing up their
[32:52] (1972.48s)
studies and everything else and planning
[32:54] (1974.00s)
to graduate and moving that little
[32:56] (1976.08s)
tassel over from their graduation. So,
[32:59] (1979.36s)
um, please give me a little bit of time
[33:01] (1981.36s)
here, but to the class of 2025,
[33:05] (1985.36s)
uh, we live in unprecedented times with
[33:08] (1988.88s)
so many opportunities, but with those
[33:11] (1991.84s)
opportunities come new challenges to
[33:14] (1994.16s)
face. uh with the advent of new
[33:17] (1997.04s)
technology like AI that's going to
[33:19] (1999.44s)
springboard us to new advancements and
[33:21] (2001.64s)
realities, our governments and leaders
[33:24] (2004.24s)
struggling and fighting to retain their
[33:26] (2006.08s)
own pieces of land and humanity. Uh
[33:28] (2008.96s)
environmental changes that affect the
[33:31] (2011.20s)
air, the oceans and um the earth that we
[33:35] (2015.32s)
cherish. The one game changer in all of
[33:38] (2018.56s)
this is you. You are the ones that will
[33:43] (2023.12s)
lead us into the next phase of evolution
[33:46] (2026.16s)
as a society and as human beings. You
[33:49] (2029.60s)
are the dreamers, the builders, the
[33:53] (2033.00s)
philanthropists, the athletes, the
[33:55] (2035.28s)
artists, the peacemakers, the
[33:57] (2037.20s)
disruptors,
[33:58] (2038.80s)
uh the future fathers and mothers, and
[34:00] (2040.96s)
most importantly, our future. When I was
[34:04] (2044.64s)
thinking about writing this speech, I
[34:07] (2047.04s)
thought of the years that we have been
[34:08] (2048.72s)
working together. And what came to mind
[34:11] (2051.20s)
were the many phrases that I have used
[34:14] (2054.00s)
and adopted to convey how to be
[34:16] (2056.40s)
successful in your college admissions
[34:18] (2058.00s)
journey. And I would really love to
[34:20] (2060.40s)
share them with you and remind you of
[34:22] (2062.16s)
them today. So my first one, and
[34:24] (2064.48s)
everybody knows it, is dig deep. Don't
[34:27] (2067.88s)
superficial. Challenge yourself to be
[34:30] (2070.24s)
more than you are today. Be
[34:32] (2072.40s)
introspective and find the essential
[34:35] (2075.12s)
qualities, thoughts, and inspirations
[34:37] (2077.52s)
and motivations that make you who you
[34:39] (2079.84s)
are and hold on to them. Be true to
[34:42] (2082.88s)
yourself and the others and don't forget
[34:45] (2085.36s)
where you came from. Second, slap the
[34:48] (2088.48s)
reader in the face. Okay? Be bold and
[34:51] (2091.28s)
announce to the world who you are right
[34:53] (2093.68s)
from the start. Now, of course, I'm not
[34:56] (2096.24s)
advocating violence, but this is to call
[34:59] (2099.36s)
this is to a call to you to let you
[35:02] (2102.16s)
encounter the world and to let them know
[35:04] (2104.56s)
who you are. Don't wait for the world to
[35:06] (2106.72s)
give you what you need. Go out and take
[35:08] (2108.88s)
it and let your voice be heard loud,
[35:11] (2111.68s)
proud, and most importantly with purpose
[35:15] (2115.56s)
integrity. The third, you miss 100% of
[35:19] (2119.12s)
the s shots that you don't take. So,
[35:21] (2121.68s)
don't be afraid to take chances. If you
[35:24] (2124.40s)
fail, fail fast. But don't even accept
[35:27] (2127.44s)
the mindset that failure is a negative
[35:29] (2129.60s)
thing. Shift that mindset that if the
[35:32] (2132.48s)
result is not something you expected,
[35:35] (2135.04s)
then use that as a means to reassess,
[35:38] (2138.24s)
learn, and grow and try again. Think of
[35:41] (2141.60s)
failure as a stepping stone to future
[35:45] (2145.24s)
success. Now, I love one of these
[35:47] (2147.28s)
phrases. Uh I use it for my own is plan
[35:49] (2149.92s)
the work and work the plan. Be strategic
[35:52] (2152.96s)
in the way you live your life. Okay?
[35:55] (2155.76s)
Take risks, but calculated risks. Do a
[35:58] (2158.64s)
little work to understand the terrain
[36:00] (2160.32s)
that is in front of you. Determine the
[36:02] (2162.40s)
possible pitfalls. Come up with a
[36:04] (2164.16s)
contingency actions. And remember that
[36:07] (2167.04s)
you can only control what you do, but
[36:09] (2169.84s)
you do have the ability to influence
[36:11] (2171.92s)
what others do. So take that plan and
[36:14] (2174.88s)
step forward boldly knowing that you can
[36:17] (2177.36s)
execute your plan with
[36:19] (2179.08s)
confidence. Okay, here's another one.
[36:21] (2181.60s)
How do you eat an elephant? Well, of
[36:24] (2184.08s)
course, I keep saying this to people and
[36:25] (2185.60s)
they're like, "What are you talking
[36:26] (2186.32s)
about, Coach Art?" Well, one piece at a
[36:28] (2188.32s)
time. When things seem to be big and
[36:31] (2191.12s)
life is too overwhelming, don't try to
[36:33] (2193.68s)
conquer the world or even your first
[36:35] (2195.52s)
college class all at once. Take it one
[36:38] (2198.24s)
step at a time, one hour at a time, one
[36:40] (2200.88s)
minute at a time, one second at a time.
[36:43] (2203.36s)
Eat that elephant one piece at a time,
[36:46] (2206.08s)
and you will eventually finish and
[36:48] (2208.56s)
definitely be full. Okay, another one
[36:51] (2211.52s)
that I don't use as much, but I have
[36:53] (2213.12s)
used it before is how does a diamond get
[36:56] (2216.16s)
made? Well, a diamond gets made through
[36:58] (2218.72s)
time and pressure. Know that it will
[37:01] (2221.60s)
take time to get where you are. You will
[37:04] (2224.40s)
experience setbacks, heartache, and
[37:06] (2226.72s)
pain. But be patient and embrace the
[37:09] (2229.52s)
suck. As I say, embrace the suck because
[37:12] (2232.24s)
eventually that time and pressure will
[37:14] (2234.72s)
result in something strong and
[37:16] (2236.80s)
beautiful.
[37:18] (2238.32s)
Not that the final phrases that I want
[37:20] (2240.32s)
you to leave with here. Okay. And I have
[37:22] (2242.16s)
these couple of phrases that have come
[37:24] (2244.56s)
from our company values and I believe
[37:27] (2247.12s)
they rightly uh apply to your journey um
[37:30] (2250.40s)
that you are about to embark on. So for
[37:33] (2253.16s)
Eagle, our first uh number one value is
[37:36] (2256.40s)
do the right thing. Always live your
[37:38] (2258.64s)
life with integrity and honesty and
[37:40] (2260.80s)
treat others as you would want to be
[37:42] (2262.72s)
treated with love, respect and
[37:45] (2265.20s)
compassion. When you are faced with a
[37:47] (2267.36s)
dilemma and feel like you don't know
[37:49] (2269.12s)
what to do, fall back on who you are and
[37:51] (2271.84s)
your values and and as hard as it is to
[37:54] (2274.56s)
do, do the right thing always. Number
[37:57] (2277.32s)
two, win big. Take your shot and don't
[38:01] (2281.20s)
look back. You know in average uh on
[38:04] (2284.32s)
average our human life expectancy is
[38:06] (2286.32s)
roughly 79 years which equates to
[38:09] (2289.04s)
approximately
[38:10] (2290.28s)
28,854 days,
[38:12] (2292.84s)
692,496 hours and 41,549
[38:18] (2298.12s)
uh,760 minutes or 2.5 billion seconds.
[38:22] (2302.40s)
We only have a finite set of number of
[38:25] (2305.12s)
seconds in our lives. Use those seconds
[38:27] (2307.92s)
well and win big. Number three, be
[38:30] (2310.64s)
brave. Face your fears and don't let
[38:33] (2313.44s)
them dictate your life. You know, one of
[38:36] (2316.24s)
the um most favorite quotes comes from a
[38:39] (2319.52s)
a movie called Rocky Balboa. And Rocky
[38:42] (2322.24s)
Balboa, he says, "The world ain't all
[38:45] (2325.84s)
sunshine and rainbows. It's a very rough
[38:48] (2328.48s)
and mean place. And it'll beat you down
[38:51] (2331.04s)
on your knees and keep you there
[38:52] (2332.48s)
permanently if you let it." So you, me,
[38:55] (2335.20s)
or nobody is going to hit as hard as
[38:57] (2337.28s)
life. But it ain't about how you how
[39:00] (2340.16s)
hard you hit. It's about how hard you
[39:02] (2342.56s)
can get hit and keep moving forward. How
[39:05] (2345.68s)
much you can take and keep moving
[39:08] (2348.04s)
forward. That's how winning is done.
[39:11] (2351.88s)
Lastly, be uh well, sorry, third, be
[39:14] (2354.84s)
brave. Okay? Make sure you be brave. And
[39:17] (2357.48s)
lastly, continuously improve. Don't
[39:20] (2360.48s)
settle for where you are right now.
[39:22] (2362.16s)
There is always something you can
[39:23] (2363.44s)
improve in your life. Keep striving to
[39:25] (2365.52s)
be 1% better than you are today. Move
[39:28] (2368.32s)
forward and continuously improve every
[39:31] (2371.56s)
day. So to the class of 2025, on behalf
[39:36] (2376.48s)
of the staff at Eagle, we thank you for
[39:39] (2379.44s)
committing to our process and doing all
[39:41] (2381.76s)
of that hard work. We are so honored
[39:44] (2384.08s)
that you are allowed us to be part of
[39:45] (2385.92s)
your amazing college journey. We
[39:48] (2388.16s)
congratulate you on your achieving uh
[39:50] (2390.56s)
amazing achievements and we really look
[39:52] (2392.96s)
forward to seeing what incredible human
[39:54] (2394.64s)
beings you'll be become you'll become in
[39:56] (2396.56s)
the future. So good luck. Uh enjoy
[39:59] (2399.44s)
college and don't forget to check in
[40:01] (2401.28s)
once in a while with us. Okay? You did
[40:03] (2403.36s)
it. You did it in high school. Now go do
[40:05] (2405.76s)
it into the world and go ahead and get
[40:08] (2408.24s)
it done. Thank you.
[40:14] (2414.00s)
All right. Thank you so much, Coach Art,
[40:16] (2416.32s)
for those lovely, lovely words of
[40:18] (2418.40s)
wisdom. Um, and I think you you hit it
[40:21] (2421.44s)
right on the head there with all of
[40:22] (2422.88s)
those those different phrases. They're
[40:24] (2424.64s)
things that we've heard throughout our
[40:26] (2426.40s)
journeys here, and I don't think they
[40:28] (2428.28s)
are I don't think they've ever been all
[40:30] (2430.88s)
as true as they are in this moment. So,
[40:33] (2433.76s)
thank you. Thank you. Um, our next event
[40:37] (2437.12s)
is going to be our raffle. So, I will
[40:39] (2439.76s)
turn it over to Coach Seline. Um, and as
[40:42] (2442.64s)
a little bit of background, um, as a
[40:44] (2444.64s)
thank you to our seniors,
[40:47] (2447.20s)
um, who, you know, gave us all the
[40:48] (2448.88s)
information and, um, talked with us on
[40:51] (2451.68s)
their way out, we entered those
[40:53] (2453.92s)
individuals into a raffle for a new
[40:55] (2455.92s)
MacBook. So, um, Coach Seline will be
[40:59] (2459.36s)
kind of over that process. So, I'll hand
[41:01] (2461.44s)
it over to you. Yeah. All right,
[41:03] (2463.60s)
everyone. It's a moment you guys all
[41:04] (2464.96s)
been waiting for. I know this is why
[41:06] (2466.56s)
you're really here, but of course, we're
[41:09] (2469.04s)
here celebrating our seniors. I'm
[41:11] (2471.36s)
graduating and going on to the next
[41:13] (2473.28s)
chapter in life. Props to you guys. You
[41:15] (2475.20s)
guys have worked hard. You guys deserve
[41:16] (2476.64s)
everything you guys are getting. Um, so
[41:18] (2478.96s)
we're going to kick off this MacBook
[41:20] (2480.88s)
raffle. I did get some signins from our
[41:23] (2483.20s)
seniors. Um, those that are
[41:25] (2485.20s)
participating in our raffle is due to
[41:27] (2487.12s)
them doing the exit interview like coach
[41:29] (2489.28s)
Kristen said. And you must be present in
[41:31] (2491.84s)
this event to win. So, I will be rolling
[41:34] (2494.56s)
in front live and then if they are not
[41:37] (2497.20s)
here, we're going to go ahead and um,
[41:39] (2499.68s)
can we check one more time? Seline just
[41:41] (2501.20s)
in case I got everybody. Oh, I was
[41:43] (2503.44s)
checking while you guys were going
[41:44] (2504.88s)
through your thing. Yeah, but um
[41:49] (2509.12s)
there are names that are not present
[41:50] (2510.48s)
here as well. However, I just want to
[41:52] (2512.32s)
keep it fair. Those that are all here,
[41:54] (2514.24s)
um I'm going to shuffle this a couple
[41:55] (2515.60s)
times. These are names within our
[41:57] (2517.92s)
raffle. Um some people are not here. So,
[42:00] (2520.64s)
we're going to keep rolling for until
[42:02] (2522.24s)
one of them is present. All right. Hey,
[42:05] (2525.28s)
that's enough ra uh shuffles. I'm going
[42:06] (2526.96s)
to shuffle a couple times and then we'll
[42:08] (2528.24s)
go ahead and spin. Let's see. Oh my
[42:09] (2529.52s)
gosh. Here we go. MacBook for the new
[42:12] (2532.24s)
fall class.
[42:14] (2534.32s)
Is there a Is there a
[42:17] (2537.04s)
Benio? Oh, wait. Maybe not. Benio.
[42:20] (2540.44s)
Benio. Oh my gosh. Oh my god.
[42:23] (2543.36s)
Congratulations. Congratulations, Benio.
[42:26] (2546.00s)
That's amazing. Yeah, I will be in
[42:28] (2548.24s)
contact with you. Don't dip out of um
[42:31] (2551.12s)
Eagle Lock just yet. I'll be emailing or
[42:33] (2553.28s)
texting you to get some information from
[42:35] (2555.20s)
you. But congratulations. and then I'll
[42:37] (2557.44s)
work with you to get your MacBook sent
[42:39] (2559.92s)
to you. Okay. Awesome. All right. Take
[42:44] (2564.08s)
us out, Coach Kristen.
[42:47] (2567.52s)
Um, so congratulations, Benio. That's
[42:51] (2571.12s)
amazing. Um, very, very excited for you
[42:54] (2574.24s)
to be able to bring that new MacBook to
[42:56] (2576.24s)
UCLA this fall. So excited for you. Um,
[43:00] (2580.00s)
and basically in closing, um, I think
[43:02] (2582.88s)
Coach Art said it all best, so I really
[43:05] (2585.04s)
don't have anything to add to that, but
[43:06] (2586.56s)
I did say it in the chat. Please, please
[43:08] (2588.80s)
stay in touch. I will be very sad if you
[43:10] (2590.88s)
don't. I want to hear all about how
[43:12] (2592.64s)
things are going. Um, wherever you're
[43:15] (2595.44s)
going in the fall. Um, and like on the
[43:17] (2597.84s)
on Coach Art's slide, um, no matter
[43:20] (2600.64s)
where you're going this fall, we are so
[43:22] (2602.56s)
so proud of you and the hard work and
[43:25] (2605.36s)
the dedication and the effort that you
[43:26] (2606.96s)
have put in. Um, I was talking to Coach
[43:29] (2609.04s)
Seline just before this event started
[43:30] (2610.80s)
and I was like, I don't know who I am,
[43:32] (2612.32s)
but I have tears in my eyes. You know,
[43:34] (2614.16s)
this is like this is really meaningful.
[43:36] (2616.24s)
This is awesome. So, um, again, just so
[43:41] (2621.36s)
over the moon for all of you. Um, stay
[43:44] (2624.24s)
in touch, keep going out and and
[43:47] (2627.12s)
changing the world in just the same way
[43:48] (2628.96s)
that you have been over the last four
[43:50] (2630.64s)
years.
[43:52] (2632.04s)
And like I said, Coach Art said it all
[43:54] (2634.56s)
best, so I won't I won't add anything
[43:58] (2638.80s)
All right, everybody. Thanks a lot.
[44:00] (2640.92s)
Congratulations, class of
[44:03] (2643.16s)
2025. Go get them. You got this. Woohoo.
[44:07] (2647.28s)
All right. Take it easy. Bye, everybody.
[44:09] (2649.52s)
Bye. Thank you for coming. Good luck,
[44:11] (2651.60s)
class of 2025. Bye. Bye. Bye.
