Summary: College Application Q&A Session - Key Takeaways

Main Topics Covered

Summer Program Rejections - What They Mean

  • Don't use summer program results as college admission predictors
  • Summer programs have different criteria than college admissions
  • Some focus heavily on academics, others don't
  • Students who got rejected from summer programs have gotten into top colleges, and vice versa
  • Take a step back and review what happened
  • Analyze what went well vs. what didn't
  • Remember that each program looks at different criteria (academics, activities, essay types vary)

College Application Preparation Strategy

  • Start early - don't wait until August 1st when apps open
  • Applications don't change significantly year to year
  • Review current year's applications and prepare content in advance
  • Copy and paste prepared content when new applications open

  • Essays take the longest time - prioritize them

  • Start essay writing as early as possible
  • The speaker's program had 90 students 80% completed with essays through workshops
  • Essays are the most time-intensive part of applications

  • Work with the end in mind

  • Know which schools you're applying to
  • Understand different requirements for each application
  • Break down preparation into monthly/weekly goals

Waitlist Process Explained

  • How waitlists work mathematically
  • Example: 12,000 accepted, 8,000 enroll = 2,000 waitlist spots available
  • Schools want full capacity for maximum tuition revenue

  • Waitlist timeline is unpredictable

  • April: Some immediate movement when students decline offers
  • May 1st: Biggest movement after deposit deadline
  • June and beyond: Continued trickling, some notifications through summer
  • No typical timeline exists

  • Managing waitlist decisions

  • Must commit to one school by May 1st with deposit
  • If waitlisted school offers admission later, you have two options:
    • Forfeit original deposit and switch schools
    • Decline waitlist offer and stay with original choice
  • Some students are willing to lose deposits for their dream schools

Key Action Steps

  • Start application preparation immediately, don't wait for August
  • Focus heavily on essay preparation as it's the most time-consuming
  • Research specific requirements for each target school
  • Prepare for potential waitlist scenarios and decision-making

Important Reminders

  • Summer program results ≠ college admission predictions
  • Applications remain largely consistent year to year
  • Schools actively manage waitlists to reach full enrollment capacity
  • The process can extend well into summer months

Note: The speaker mentioned this was part of a weekly Q&A series that will transition to monthly sessions due to high season demands.

So, first off, apologies for for not for having us the the the uh the rejection, right, from the I'm assuming the summer programs that you guys apply to um is the thing there. So, the first thing and you what you did really well is like let's take a step back. Take a step back, right? Step one. All right. Step one, take a step back. Take a step back and review, right? What happened, right? What happened to these ones as well, too? Did we Okay. And and what went well? What went well? what didn't go well as well too keep in mind also summer programs are similar but also a little different than admissions process itself right so uh if we bank on it being similar so what's something that they do keep in mind that not every uh col uh summer program application looks at the same things right not every summer not every summer program looks at the same criteria like for example do did the summer program ask you for academics some some care some don't. Did they ask you for your activities? Some do, some don't. What type of questions do they ask you for their essays? Some is very some are very similar to the to the colleges, some are not. So, seeing that as well, too, because keep in mind, right, a lot of some programs are really academically kind of driven. So, let's say you're really really good in school and you got it, or let's say you weren't the strongest in school, so you didn't get it. But that's not how college admissions is. So, again, I wouldn't use that as an indicator at all of success or not success. I've seen stories of students who got into a bunch of programs who didn't get to college, vice versa, students who didn't do well in the the the summer programs but did do really well on application. So again, keep that in mind as number one, right? That being said, right, we do encourage students to apply some of these programs because at least it helps you go through the same process, right? Same process as well too because number two is preparation, right? Preparation for the upcoming year, upcoming app season as well too, right? Okay. So, when it comes to preparing, right, you should be starting sooner rather than later. As a lot of the apps uh officially open on August 1st, right? Apps open on August 1st. Doesn't mean you need to start on August 1, though. It means you're going to go ahead and uh you're going to go ahead and um you're going to go ahead and make sure you have it ready for them. So, again, I tell students the apps don't really change year after year, right? Because of that, right? Because of that, our goal is to make sure that we're able to prepare for that. The apps are the same. So, go through this year's app, make sure everything is good to go. And if it is good to go, you can go ahead and uh you can go ahead and sub and uh prepare for it. And when the new app comes out, you can copy and paste it, right? The apps um don't uh applications don't really change year after year as well too, right? So, that's the big thing when it comes to the prepare for the app season itself too. And also the big thing is the essays take the longest to get done, right? So make sure you start earlier on the essays. Like I'm not sure how much effort you spent on the essays when it when it came to uh when it came to the um when it came to the uh the summer programs. But when it comes to the uh when it comes to the app season essays, right, make sure you start early. A lot of our students, the last two weeks, we've been hosting essay workshops for our students. So we have I think as of today 90 students times yeah 90 students who are done with uh the majority of their essay content as well today they're like 80% completed. So then we're just kind of cleaning up the rest as way as well too. So again for you if you haven't started yet I would definitely start soon uh to make sure you guys are good to go when it comes to this uh is the key as well. Okay. So that's that's going to be the the biggest thing over here as we say I think that that's a thing to spend forward and to granular like if you're part of our coaching program we can help you kind of break this down into a monthly weekly kind of status you always want to start when we we say work with the end in mind right uh work with the end in mind so know which apps right which apps which apps you're applying to and also uh the different requirements ments requirements requirements for each application. Keep in mind some schools let's I think have time for one more question and see what's a good question to let's I think have time for one more question and see what's a good question to answer from the ones we have left. Um let's talk about going to the school if that makes sense right. So if you got in, you probably got to other schools too and you will probably pick and choose what school you go to and so schools will have a smaller number except a smaller number except right so let's say the example is like uh 8,000 uh accepted right so uh yeah 10,000 spots 12,000 people got a yes 8,000 people said officially yes that means the remainder right is the weight list weight list acceptances is so in this case our example is 2,000 right 2,000 which is which is the 10k minus 8k right is the is the uh is the weightless amount and what they do the weight is always a mysterious kind of kind of puzzle uh as well too so they'll let you in some some will let some will tell you uh soon like within like April when people start saying no right away they'll start saying yes right away to the weight people is one option right some people will wait till after right the biggest the biggest leap the biggest jump right would be uh May because on May 1st that's the submit your intent to register deadline right uh will be after May 1st because once that that's the official like cut off of like the schools like got it I'm short this many students to be to be full because colleges want to have a full capacity as well too in that case they're going to go through and run through their entire weight list usually on that day next right But sometimes, right, then the students who got off who who got the weightless offer, you already said yes to another school, right? So now you're like, here's the school I said yes to, but here's this school who offered me off the weight list. Then you're like, do I forfeit my deposit? Do I go with this new uh weight list school? Do I stay with my old school? Then that next thing happens, right? Then the next group would be in June, right? or like okay once this debt dust settles how many spots left and it starts trickling down. We even had some students who found out in the middle of summer as well too right to middle of summer of summer as well too. So I think that's going to be the the thing over here is they're going to kind of go through the list and try because the goal is the school does want to be full because full means they get full tuition from all the students is the key too. So no one wants to come no one wants to enter the school year less right less than the uh full capacity. So that's going to be a thing there. So in ter of typical time there is no typical timeline right. So is basically you'll find out soon till summer as well too. So how do you juggle with the decision right? So basically keep in mind that you will need to decide your your school your first choice right your college choice by May 1st because on May 1st you're going to say yes to at least one school I hope you guys say yes to at least one school right then that's the school you officially kind of commit and by how you pay a deposit as well too so you saying hey I'm committing to this one school at the very minimum then right after you commit to that one school then the weight list school comes up for you, you have an option. Do you forfeit? Because if you do it, you're going to forfeit, right? If weight list hap a weight list offers you a spot, right? You either forfeit, option A is forfeit the deposit at your May 1 school, right? Or B, you kind of forfeit the weightless offer. forfeit the weightless offer at the school you offered offered the weight list for. Right? So either one if you forfeit the deposit that means you lose the money you pay another deposit. So but my friend for some students you'd be happy to pay the deposit because you're like it was to lose the deposit because yeah cool. I'm getting to my dream school, my top school, whatever it is as well too. Okay. So that's going to be how the weightless kind of system works as well. Okay, cool. That's pretty much it. I I'm going a little overtime as well too. But again, that's pretty much it for today. The rest of the questions I uh we have our team's going to gather them and put it down to the following week uh as well too. So if you guys are want to join me again, we'll do another Q&A session next Monday. Again, uh we'll start at again also 5:00 p.m. Pacific. Answer any questions you guys have. Again, after that, we are going to change the the schedule a little bit. So instead of doing it every single week, uh because we're going into our high season for our students, we're going to reduce it to once a month, right? Maybe we'll change in a few months, but for now, we'll change it down to once a month for you guys. Uh just so we can spend our time with our students to make sure they are good to go as well, too. Okay, that is pretty much uh me here today. Hopefully you guys enjoyed that session as well. It was pretty quiet session uh for folks uh who joined us live, but for those who presubmitted a question, hopefully that was helpful for you guys as well too. Again, if you want to submit a question for next week, you can always go to eagleock.com uh askcoachttony and we'll add it to our queue of questions for the following week. Okay, that being said, take
