Navigating College Admissions and Financial Aid: Insights from Coach Tony’s Live Q&A

Hello everyone! Recently, Coach Tony hosted a lively and informative live Q&A session across multiple platforms such as Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok, answering a range of questions about college admissions, financial aid, and student mindset. Whether you're a high school student preparing for college or a parent navigating the complexities of financial aid, this summary distills the key takeaways from Coach Tony’s session to help you succeed.

1. Do You Need Internships or Passion Projects to Get Into Top UC Schools?

Short answer: No, internships or passion projects are not mandatory.

Coach Tony emphasized that while internships and passion projects can enhance your application, they are not a strict requirement for admission to top University of California (UC) schools. Admissions committees primarily focus on three pillars:

  • Academics: Show strong academic rigor through honors, AP, IB, or college-level courses, coupled with solid and improving grades.
  • Activities: Demonstrate sustained involvement by dedicating consistent hours per week to extracurriculars. Schools want to see active engagement in your community or school.
  • Application Essays: These are less about listing accomplishments and more about revealing who you are β€” focusing about 30% on what you've done and 70% on why and how it shaped you.

In summary, focus on a balanced application that highlights your academic strength, meaningful activities, and authentic personal essays.

2. Understanding Financial Aid: FAFSA, Grants, Loans, and Scholarships

One student asked about deciphering their financial aid package from UC Berkeley, especially whether FAFSA money has to be paid back.

Coach Tony broke down Financial Aid 101:

  • FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid): This is an application you submit starting October 1st, regardless of income level. It sends your financial info to schools on your list (up to 10 schools at a time).
  • Financial Aid Package: After acceptance, schools provide a package that may include:
  • Grants: Free money you don’t repay.
  • Loans: Borrowed money with interest that you must repay, typically starting six months after graduation.
  • Work-Study: A federal program where you work part-time on campus; the employer and government share your wages.
  • Scholarships: Typically require separate applications; this is free money awarded by schools or external organizations.

You are not obligated to accept loans; you can choose to decline them. Grants and scholarships are β€œfree money” and should be accepted.

3. Facing the Transition from Middle School to High School

A heartfelt question came from a student nervous about leaving 8th grade for high school.

Coach Tony’s advice focused on mindset and preparation:

  • Growth is Bittersweet: Moving on to new stages like high school or college naturally comes with some fear but also excitement.
  • Mindset: Embrace a positive outlook. It’s normal to be scared, but focusing on the exciting opportunities ahead can help overcome anxiety.
  • Preparation: Build soft skills such as communication, time management, and social skills to confidently face new environments.
  • Remember, everyone starts fresh in high school and college β€” you’re not alone.

4. How to Address Changes in AP Course Offerings on College Applications

One student asked how to explain that their high school increased AP classes from 7 to 15 during their time there.

Coach Tony suggests:

  • If the increase was sudden and recent, explain this in the additional comments section of your application to clarify you had no control over it.
  • If AP offerings increased gradually over several years, it’s expected that students adapt year by year.
  • Admissions readers understand such changes and will consider your context.

5. Is Taking Only Three Years of a Foreign Language Adequate?

Many students worry about language requirements for top colleges.

Coach Tony clarifies:

  • Most colleges require a minimum of 2 years of foreign language.
  • Many recommend 3 years, which is a good target to aim for.
  • Four years is generally not required unless you’re pursuing a language-heavy major (e.g., linguistics or humanities).
  • Ultimately, do what aligns with your interests and goals; three years is sufficient for most students.

6. Should You Take an AP Class for Rigor or an Honors Class Related to Your Major?

A student planning to major in human biology wondered whether to choose an easy AP for GPA boost or honors courses relevant to their major.

Coach Tony's advice is to avoid thinking in β€œeither/or” terms. Instead:

  • Aim to take both when possible β€” AP classes for rigor and honors classes for depth in your major.
  • If schedule conflicts force a choice, prioritize based on your academic goals and major requirements.

7. How to Ask for a Bigger Role at a Nonprofit Without Being Pushy?

For students gaining experience through nonprofits, Coach Tony recommends:

  • First, get your foot in the door by taking on initial roles.
  • Demonstrate your capability and reliability in current tasks.
  • Gradually express interest in bigger roles by showcasing your skills and willingness to contribute more.
  • Avoid being pushy; let your work ethic pave the way for advancement.

Final Thoughts

Coach Tony’s live Q&A session offered practical wisdom on college admissions, financial aid, and student mindset. Key themes include:

  • Admissions look for academic strength, meaningful activities, and authentic storytelling.
  • Financial aid packages can be complex; understanding grants vs. loans is crucial.
  • Growth stages can be challenging but manageable with the right mindset and preparation.
  • Communicate changes in your academic environment clearly in applications.
  • Balance rigor and passion in course selection.
  • Approach leadership opportunities with patience and proven reliability.

For students and parents preparing for college, these insights provide a roadmap for navigating the journey with confidence and clarity.

Hello everyone. Hope everyone's doing awesome. Go say hiasa folks over here. Looks like we are going live on Twitch. Go say hiasa folks. Over here looks like we are going live on Twitch. Hello Twitch folks. Welcome. Welcome. Um, anything? Not sure. All right. Looks like we are streaming. Looks like we are live. So, hello. Hello everyone. I hope everyone is doing awesome so far here today. Uh let's go ahead and click record and we will go live in three, two, one. Alrighty. Go live here as well too. All right. What's up everyone? Coach Tony here. Welcome back to another edition of Ask Coach Tony Anything. So every single Monday, actually for the last few Mondays, I can't say everyone, but the last few Mondays, we've been going live. be kind of answering questions as well too uh for you guys here. Uh you guys love it as well too at the same time. I don't know if I can do this every single week as well too. Our schedule is getting packed. It's summertime which means it's a it's our big work month. I always joke that our work schedule is very opposite of most people. You guys work during daytime 9 to5. We start work at 5 because our students are usually free during the evenings. We work on the weekends as well too. So getting this time consistently every week might be a little tough to do every single week. So just a heads up. We were doing it. We will be going live today and next Monday. But then uh starting in uh starting in um starting in um in in August, we'll go the first Monday and that's it. We'll be going one live only the first Monday of the uh of the month and we'll do the first Mondays of each month just to try to keep it consistent that way unless it's a holiday. We'll push it out a little bit. But I think that'll be the kind of the game plan for us over here. Okay. So, with that being said, uh we are going live on a few different platforms. A few things may or may not uh be working. So, hopefully I see a few on YouTube. Hello. Hello people on YouTube. Uh if you guys are joining me here live. So, and we are here on Tik Tok. Tik Tok is uh live here as well. Welcome. Welcome to everyone. So, we're going to go uh answer some questions for you guys. Again, for those who uh are joining, we just answer some questions live for you guys. I see get I get questions from eagleock.com uh ask coach Tony and then I'm just kind of go through them, kind of answer the questions that we see here in the platform. So, if you guys have any questions, feel free to drop it um in the chat so I can kind of see it as well too. If not, I'm just going to go through the kind of presubmitted questions that I have uh over here as well. Okay, Facebook seems like it's not working still. So I'll try a few questions first. I'll pop try again uh for that one. Okay. So first one here, one of the questions here that I have in the chat is how do we analyze if we can get into any top UC without any internships or uh without any internships or um or passion projects as well too, right? So the question is the first thing to keep in mind is that you definitely uh don't need to do an internship or passion project to get into uh these colleges. Really quick in the chat in Tik Tok over here I have a I have a little really cool thing little comment got screenshot it. OMG, Coach Tony, it's been years going into my senior year of college now. Fantastic. What school are you at? Uh over over here in Tik Tok land. school are you graduating from? And good luck. Very excited for you uh as well too. Right? So going back to the question here, right? You definitely don't need an intro or passion project. You hear that a lot cuz people are doing it. Do you need to? No. Can you though? Can you? Yes. Right. So I think that's the big takeaway. You don't have to, but can you? You definitely can. Uh if you wanted to over here. So when it comes to uh the the things that schools look for right keep in mind keep in mind that these top UC colleges right look for right a few things academics activities and the applications itself. So when it comes to academics, what we're looking for here, acade academics, what they're looking for here is strong rigor throughout the uh with throughout the years, right? So maximizing your honors, AP, IB, college level courses and strong grade trends as well too, right? So you want to have as many A's as you can. If you get B is cool, too. Bes is a good school as well to keep making keeping those uh on is the key here. When it comes to activities, right? When it comes to activities, we're not looking for passion project is one of the lines or like uh internships, one of them. What they're looking for here is going to be hours per week, right? Sustained hours per week as well too. How many hours are you spending doing your activities throughout the year? because schools aren't just looking for smart students, looking for students who are active in the in their community at their school uh as well too. So that's going to be the big thing for the first part and then this next thing is also I call it tasting your major as well too, right? Meaning what major are you going to be and then how are you going to taste that? How do I know you're that major is the next piece of this over here. So those and then also uh next one is activities that you the student enjoys as that's the third thing right so looking for the hours you're spending showing evidence of your major and activities that you enjoy is number three and ultimately at the end of the day your application is the biggest most important thing this is the I'm putting quotes the essays right because they're not essays you don't want to write them like an essay they want to share who you are specifically I call it 30% what 70% Why right 30% of what you did 70% is the inside of you. So for the student who asked the question like do you need to uh how do we get into use without internet? You don't need those right? It could be again you just want to show these traits here. Okay. Uh over in Tik Tok land over here we got uh University of Georgia. Fantastic. Very awesome school as well too. What's up coach Lee? What's up as well? I'm getting old. Eyes are small as well too. What's up? Uh not many people know me as Coach Lee. So, I'm assuming you either went to the high school I taught at or or or or something uh as well because uh rarely go by Coach Lee itself as well too. But yeah, uh I'm going live right now for those who are joining me right now. We're just going live answering some questions. Tik Tok, we're hanging out over here. Um we're going also live on YouTube and Twitch right now. So, if you guys have any questions about anything, go ahead and drop it in the chat. Uh we can just go and chitty chat um as well too for you guys. But let's go ahead and keep going. Next question here. Uh, next question here is I am confused about the amount of money that Berkeley gave me. Uh, does does the way FASA works, I have to pay it back later. I can't tell whether the money is FASA or merit scholarship or something. So, great questions. So, let's do a quick little like financial aid 101, right? Oops. Financial aid kind of 101 real fast, right? So basically everyone right if you're Tango school everyone you will submit FASA all right so first off FASA opens right fasta opens on October 1st right fast is the free application for federal student aid an application that's the key word is an application that opens you fill out the regardless of your income whether you make $1 a year or a million dollars a year you still fill out the FASA right once you fill out the FASA then you're going to go ahead and submit it. Right? Once you you're going to submit it in to the various colleges. So under FASA, they're going to add you're going to add right add your colleges under the FASA section, right? So all the colleges you enter as well too. What's going to happen? They're going to send the FASA the financial aid information over to all these schools to then give you a financial aid package from the colleges themselves. Keep that in mind. Okay. Keep also keep in mind that FASA has a limit. I believe it's 10 or 20, one of those two numbers, right? I think it's 10. Um, once you're at your limit, right, if you have more than 10 colleges, right? What you want to do is you want to send it off, right? Send it off. You want to then send it off, right? Then wait one, two weeks. Then you want to call them up and say, "Hey, college, did you get my fa my FASA information?" They're going to say yes or no. If they say yes, they got it. Then you can go back to FASA, right? and then change the college list. If one school gets to them and all the other schools got it as well too, then you're going to change the list and resubmit FASA again. Again, just like the application, it's going to send the data over to all the colleges over here. Okay, so that's going to be the the um the college list over here itself, right? So that's that's pretty much FASA. Keep in mind that some schools might ask for like a CSS profile uh for some colleges uh as well too. It's more the private schools that ask for this, right? All right. So, I ask you the financial aid. Once you get it, you're going to get a package back. You're going to get a financial aid package from each college that you'd apply to, right? So, and again, keep in mind, they do this once you get in. So, they have your information. They wait till you get accepted. If you do, then they'll figure it out. If you don't get accepted, there's kind of no point to calculate at all. Right? So, that's that's the big thing over here. But, let's say you you got it. You got the financial aid package. The thing here is going to be uh they're going to give you a few combination things. and they give you a combination of grants. They're going to give you uh loans. They're going to give you work study and some schools may also give you a scholarship as well too, right? So, it's breaking this down. First part is grants. Grants is completely free money. Money you don't have to pay back at all. That's kind of the first one. That's kind of the best thing of all, right? Best one is grants. Don't have to try. You apply, you get it, you're good to go, right? Next thing is going to be loans. When it comes to loans, right? When it comes to loans, what you're looking for, not what you're looking for, what happens here is that loans, actually, I forgot to give me one sec. I forgot to do one thing. Um, [Music] loans is basically money you borrow, right? You get to pay back borrowed money with interest is is the thing, right? So, you borrow the money and you pay it back uh with more. So, that's kind of how it is. It gets a little nuanced. There's um there's going to be subsidized loans. There's going to be uh subsidized loans. There's going to be uh non unsubsidized loans. Okay? Depending on money that you pay back now or later um is the thing here. So, that's going to be the first one, right? And loans you pay back and typically it's six months after you graduate from from high from college, I mean, right? So, graduate six months, then you start repaying it back afterwards. Next thing is work study. So when it comes to work study, what it is is that it's basically loans that you work off. That you work off. You usually get a campus job for it. Campus job. You work on it. It's going to tell you, hey, you're going to go ahead and um you're going to go ahead and um you have like $5,000 to play with. And then the employer is going to pay you from that amount is the thing, right? So when it comes to this, the big thing here, right? The big thing here is that uh when it comes to uh the work study, right, it's typically a higher paying job than most people would pay you as a normal job. The reason why is that how work study works, the government's going in 50/50 with the employer. So instead of paying you 20 bucks, the employer paid 20 10, the government pays 10. So you get 20. So you get the reward. Each it uh the the employer saves money because they're paying you less than everything. Uh so it's a win-win situation for everyone, right? And once your work study runs out, the employer has an option to kind of keep you on but pay you at your current rate or say you're done because you pretty much worked off your work study. A lot of the more common ones like the library jobs, that's what work study is also. And last one is scholarships, right? Scholarship is free money from the colleges typically, right? Free money from the colleges typically as well too. So when it comes to this, this is basically uh schools that you have to apply. It's a key as well too. It's usually not like automatic free money. You have to apply for it to get something uh is the other half over here too. Okay. So that's be what scholarship is. So going back to this student who asked their question, right? Confused by the money they gave me. Uh you applied to FA this student applied to FASA and Berkeley when you got accepted. It was like a financial aid kind of portal, right? And in the portal itself, it had a few things for you. Hey, grants we'll give you this month and then for for loans we give you this much and then forksite this much. So they give you all the different things there and then you need to accept it. You either say yep I accept that and you take that as well too or you just leave alone like I say you want you want to accept grants because that's that's money that's free money take that but loans you don't have to take the loans right if you don't want to just leave the loans there you can definitely just leave the loans alone and not touch it as well too that means it's coming out of your pocket instead. Either way, the colleges will give you enough to cover the cost of college is usually a thing. One thing that's new now is that there's limits on certain things. So, a lot of it will be more on the parents to to be on the parents uh as well too is is the difference over here. Okay. So, that's going to be uh the answer to this question uh here. So, again, take a little pause now. People who are here, feel free to say hi. I'm just trying to get things set up. Things keep crashing on my end is the thing. Um but uh [Music] so yeah so we are going live folks who are here on let me see if we have any YouTube comments uh that popped in since I went live since I haven't opened that up on this end yet. Um awesome. We have our team I think on over on YouTube land making sure we have questions. Tik Tok is here. people keep popping in. Hello everyone uh for popping on by as well too. Um fantastic, fantastic. Cool. Awesome. So yeah, if you have questions, feel free to pop in the chat. Uh if not, we just keep on going. We'll keep on going. Next one's a fun one. Next one is uh non really like academic but was again very real, very real question that comes up, right? Uh, one person uh, a student asked, "I'm sad that I'm leaving eighth grade because my teachers and school was so nice and I'm scared for high school as well too, right? So, I think uh, one of a few ways to kind of answer this question. Uh, I'm going to throw a few questions back at the student uh, for this one. So, if you're watching this uh, this recording kind of something think about, right? So, I think this is this is basically what growth look growth looks and feels like, right? As well too, right? So, there's going to be stages in your life, right? going from middle school to high school, going from high school to college, from college to whatever the next thing is. Some of you guys going to end up going to your to your masters to your PhD. Some people different programs when you work in the future to different jobs, different companies as well too, right? It's always going to feel a little bittersweet, right? Um move movement moving up always feels a bit bittersweet, right? But exciting is what I always say, right? It's always exciting as well, too. It's gonna be really fun because again what what usually happens either it's really really really good is number one or number two right um it's it's better than you expected as well too so I think the big thing to keep in mind the big thing keep in mind here is all it usually comes down to mindset and preparation right it's basically how you're mentally preparing for that next stage that next growth that next evolutions number Bless you. Okay. And then the second part is preparation. How you preparing for this as well too, right? So when it comes to mindset, right? Is how you're thinking about the process, right? So could you be scared? Of course, right? And and and sure a little bit of us is always scared. But another way to think about it's going to be a very exciting time as well too. I think your brain kind of has is more powerful than you would think is the thing, right? So again, it's one of those things that if you can believe it and you can probably do it, right? If you can believe it, believe it, it can usually happen as well too, right? So one of the things is that your brain is very powerful. I think once you go once you study this a little harder like uh mindset stuff that's a very big thing. A lot of reason why students achieve the way they do. Again, I always I always say uh IV kits aren't accidental. It's not in you can't accidentally get into the IVs, right? The students when you talk to them, they're their brains are wired a little differently, right? They don't know what failure is. They just know, "Cool, I want to go here. I got to do this, this, this, this." And they don't say, "Oh, that's too hard. Oh, that's too much." It's like, "Got it. Let me try to figure out how I can do it." Versus if you told a student who can who not saying you have to go to IVs, but let's say a student who you know is not going to be bound towards the IVs, where you tell them, "Hey, do this." They're like, "Oh, it's a lot of work. I probably can't do it. It's too hard." As well, too. It's the exact same thing, but they're both going to react a little differently. It comes down to their mindset, how they're viewing that is going to be the big thing. So again, so going back to your mindset, how you think about things is that so if the student if you're scared, it's okay to be scared, right? But if you're only scared going in, then you're going to shut down a lot of opportunities that you could have opened up as well too, right? So again, it's like mentally preparing. Hey, I'm going to feel excited. if you need to kind of fake it a little bit in your brain. Fake it a little bit in your brain to get excited for the journey as well too. But the second part is preparation, right? Preparation as well too. A lot of our students, right? If you prepare for something, right, you're you're not going to be worried. Again, it's imagine you have a test coming up and you prepared all day, all night, all week and you went as well too. Then you're going to have a easy time, right, in in the test itself. But let's say you didn't study. If you didn't study, it's gonna be super duper hard to get the answer because you're you're freaking out. Same thing with preparation, right? Again, you had an awesome experience. Let's prepare now for high school. What skills do you need? Not just the hard skills, the soft skills, right? Learn to talk to other new people, especially if you go into a new school, right? A lot of people moved to school. So, it's like a new fresh start for everyone. By the way, sports, it happens again when you go to college. Every And I call that the ultimate reset just because everyone there, you're now 18 and lost together, right? So that's that's the beauty of going to college um is you're all 18, you're going to a new school, not knowing anything together, but you kind of strangers together is the thing, right? So and prep preparation being being prepared uh for what's to come is the key, right? So again, uh for this student, if you want to chat with uh one of our coaches there, again, it's more of a mental thing I feel as well too because again, um you guys will be fine is the thing, right? You hear a lot of scary stories of uh of uh things in movies, but it's not really that doesn't really happen as much as well, right? So again, just uh again, feel free to chat to our our team who can help you out with that. Okay. Um beautiful, beautiful. Moving on. Next question. Right. Uh this one question says my high school offers my high school offers 15 AP classes as of today when my my high school my high school is new and in ninth and tth grade the offerings was only seven APs. Uh and we I'm assuming that the family did the planning and schedule on that. Uh so how do readers understand this? Do we use the comment section to explain? Um I need a few more context for this student but I'm assuming to understand the question uh is that you when you joined the high school right they only offered seven but now they offer seven 15 APs right I'd be curious right question for you is was this like a jump this past year where you didn't have a lot of time to adjust number one or right was this gradual ual over the years because let's say it's a jump this last year, right? So that means from the last three years you were in high school till now, you had no clue, you couldn't prepare for it. It just boom added on more AP classes, right? Then you can easily say and then not not going to hurt you at all, right? Uh if it was last minute, like a last minute change, right? Then uh share on your apps, but keep in mind but keep in mind you had no control over this is the difference. Okay. But second piece here, right? If it was last minute, but right if it was gradual and each year you knew it was coming each year they added one or two or three, right? Then it kind of was on you, right? Was on you to know or to make the changes of this as well too. So when it comes back to this again either way, yes, right? Yes. We want to explain this in the additional comments section comments section. Uh but to what extent and so for a lot of people not not nothing super crazy. You don't need to as well too. I'm assuming by the way I'm assuming based on the question this was uh this past year they just added eight new APs to your school and you couldn't have the chance to change it as well too. So I wouldn't worry too much there. Right. But keep in mind the readers will understand that um as well. So, don't worry there. Okay. Uh, people are still flowing into our different rooms. Hello everyone. Hope everyone's doing awesome so far. Again, we're doing a doing a Q&A, quick little Q&A session for you guys. If you have any questions, go ahead and pop. I'm just answering questions from uh the presubmitted questions that we got uh from uh the the last few last week. As well, people have been putting questions in the eagle.comaskcoachony. So, we've been answering those questions here. Uh, for those who just joined now, a quick little update. We've been doing this AMAs every single Monday, but we'll do it one more weekend next week and then starting in August, we'll do it once a month. I've been doing it every single week, but then this is getting to our heavy season of uh working with students. So, I want to make sure I can we can fully support our students as well too who's been working with us. So, in that case, again, starting August moving forward, we'll do it once a month, the first Monday unless it's a holiday, we'll do the second Monday uh of the month as well too. Okay. So is that uh next one is taking only three years of foreign language is only taking three years of a foreign language lower the chance of getting admitted top colleges. I hear heard that colleges want four years of language. So I would say it depends right depends as well too right do you need do you need for no right is the thing right can you though always yes you always say the can you always yes as well too so when it comes to the language right keep in mind that most schools most colleges require two right require two years of language some and some people like to go go above and beyond right uh that a lot of students uh a lot of colleges recommend recommend recommend three years, right? And when they recommend, we like to uh we like to recommend the goal. So again, go up to that three years is kind of the key for us over here. So if there if they recommend three, let's go for three. Again, do they recommend four? Not really, right? For a lot of colleges, they don't really recommend four years. Uh four years uh is good for like for linguistics majors, linguistic majors. uh if you were like a humanities related major, right, where um you you didn't do a lot of the like the the AP math or sciences, but you you like you love your like Spanish class or your your your your French class as well, too. You can definitely double down over there for sure. Uh is there, but again, do you need to? No. Right. So, I think it depends on kind of what your goals are, kind of where you're at, where you're missing uh things or where you can kind of get ahead as well too. Uh if you like Spanish, if you like your language, go for it. This doesn't hurt you either, right? So don't worry so much over here. Okay, so that's that. Um that's pretty much it for that question, man. Very straightforward. Again, why I say you need four? No. Can you you can't is the thing. Okay, next one. Would it be better take AP uh take an AP AP GV addition to four other APs for your year unrelated to my major for a GPA boost, but I heard AP GV is easy. Wouldn't be a strenuous AP or an honors class related to my major. uh planning for human biology. That's a great question, right? So, usually when I when the students ask me, should I take this or should I take this? 99 98 95% of time the answer uh is and not or. Right? I think most people think oh I have to do this or this. Usually when you when when you guys ask the question it's this and this. Right? You should take AP for the rigor and take the honors for the major as well too. So you do both, right? So it's an and question rather than being an or question uh is a thing as well too. I think that's pretty much it, right? So this is the or and if it comes down to if it comes down to uh uh schedule conflict where you can't do either or as well too then you pick and you figure out uh then you figure out uh which one matters more. Are you missing more of the major requirements number one or right if you have the major requirement then go for the rigor as well too but rigor we usually argue is part of really important as well. It's a great question as well too, right? So again, so we teach our students, right? You always want to get foot in the door first, then you kind of work your way up is usually an easy approach and jumping in from a top uh angle unless you have a connection, network, whatever as well too. But get your foot in and kind of work your way up is usually what we see uh work really well for a lot of our students. So when it comes to what's the best way to ask for a bigger role, right? The best way is to show uh show that uh show that you're capable of the bigger of the bigger role of the bigger of the bigger role itself. Right?
