Is the apperal spritz over? Maybe not quite yet, but there are already a few drinks that are looking to replace it. And the first one is a spaghette. It is Miller Highife, a little bit of Appperol, and some lemon if you're feeling fancy. It originated in Baltimore in about the mid2010s at a bar. Initially, it was kind of for industry insiders, bartenders, people in the service industry, and it's starting to show up on more menus and be more available. You can really see the appeal. It's pink. It's cute. It's fun and importantly it's pretty cheap. And then there's a Hugo spritz. To make a Hugo spritz, you start with two parts procco. Then you do two parts of club soda. So the thing that sets apart a Hugo spritz is elderflower laor. We're using St. Germaine. You can top it off with some mint if you're feeling a little fun and slap it for the taste. Perfect. So the Hugo Spritz is a pretty trendy cocktail right now. It's emerged as kind of a successor to the Apperol Spritz. But whereas Appperol is bittersweet and most people don't like it. It's a little polarizing, the Hugo Spritz is made with elder flour, which is sweeter, it's more floral, and it makes for more of a palatable flavor. So, basically, we have the poor man's apperal spritz and the rich man's. Emily, you recently wrote an article calling the spaghette a recession apparel spritz. Yeah. So, people sometimes also call it the NASCAR spritz, the hobo negroni, the trailer park spritz. You we're in a moment right now when people are pretty nervous about the economy. They are looking to save money in different places and so the spaghette is really a way to kind of fancy up your drink without fancing up the price. One bar owner I talked to told me that he calls Miller high life his recession beer. Alternatively, the Hugo Spritz has a fancier floral vibe. Elderflower is made in France. So, the appeal isn't much about practicality as much as it's about escapism. I feel like drinking one sort of feels like micro doing a Mediterranean getaway. But let's get down to the important question. Are either of these drinks even good? Oh god. I like it. Really? I don't. So, it's a little bit bitter, which I actually do kind of like, but if I'm going to drink a beer, I actually don't need it to be sweet either. So, I just feel like I'll take my apperol in one side and my beer in the other. And that that works fine for me. It is so good. Yeah, this hits the spot. It really tastes like a flower. Yeah, I think elderflower just is such a crowd-pleaser. That's why they call it the bartender's ketchup. Oh my gosh, I've never heard that. It's just a completely different vibe from the baguette. Different bars, different aspirations, different budgets. If you have $15, maybe this is for you. If you got eight, you might want to stick with our other friend. So, listen. Honestly, I think this is the drink of the summer. It's cheap. It's fun. I think the Hugo Spritz will be around for a long time and if we can't take this summer, we'll take the next one.
